Question about interior "map" lights

Question about interior "map" lights

Postby bradaskinsbradaskins is online! [OP] » July 6th 2020, 5:17pm

I pulled four map/personal lights from a GM van at the junkyard. I confirmed they all work.
However, two of the four have different color wiring and different color "junction box". Do you think the different colors mean anything?
All four have an extra black wire, I'm not sure what that wire is for.
I'd like to connect them all together and run only two wires back to my house battery.
I'll be putting these in the ceiling for personal lights in my camper van.

Any ideas about the highlighted parts of this image?

I'll take a stab in the dark (I'm so clever after my morning coffee I can't stand it)

are the switches lighted?

No, I don't think the switches are lit. The switches are a solid black button. Good thought!

Depending on what model and features that the van it came out of, were configured with, It could be a whole host of things.

Could be a dome light over ride, sensor line to tell a security system that the reading light is on. It could be an extra ground to connect to the chassis so one ground is controlled by the dimmer switch/headlight, and the other is for the little switch next to the lamp.

Only way to really tell is to get your meter out and test the way they function.

My dome lights are separated from the map/courtesy lights so that the map/readers do not turn on when the doors are opened. I've seen some Vans that have only one set of overhead lamps and the door switches / headlight switch control these lamps and there is a "manual switch" override.

There's also a feature in some of the security systems that read the "lit state" of dome lights to tell if a switch was left open.

I got these in mine. 03 ceiling console. The black is a ground. The power are just that. The other wires are grounds that run to the dome light switch which turns them off. Through the dome light defeat if present. That simply interrupts the ground circuit. Opening the doors grounds the circuit which makes them turn on.

So the main lights work when you open the door. Turn off by the dome light defeat where ever it is on your van if as mentioned you even have that option. The independent ground is because the doors can be shut (lights off) and the dome light defeat is on. Also lights not working. And pushing the button for the map light function still works. Lights come on.

So test till you figure it out. Now that it is clear as mud how they work.

These map lights are really only for reading or just to spotlight an area in the van. I have the regular dome/map lights that are hooked up to the doors. I won't and don't need to hook up the new lights to the doors.
I just did a test and daisy-chained all the lights with pigtails to run only two wires to the in house battery.
