Dutch Door keylock location, because I'm curious.

Dutch Door keylock location, because I'm curious.

Postby augidog [OP] » July 11th 2020, 5:07pm

I was admiring this clean Astro RWD, when I realized the keylock is on the liftgate. I don't know squat about years or variants, this van had cladding. seems to me this location would be inconvenient because the 'gate has to pop open. is it in fact standard or did someone effect a custom fix? as I said...I'm curious, because I've never seen or noticed this here on A/S, or in real life.

I should have looked more closely at the lower door, because from this distance I could see a round feature under the handle where I'm used to seeing the lock. I didn't want to get any closer and make people think I was casing a vehicle in the parking lot, and I certainly didn't want to publish someone's plate number.

Some of the newer vans had them. My 04 has it. Some put a back up camera in the spot the key cylinder is on our 95's.

My doors came from a 94 and the lock cylinder is in the stock location But since my plate box was broken and I got one from pnp it did not have the hole in the box for the lock I had to drill it out. So my guess would be the early years of the dutch doors was by the handle and the newer ones were closer to the wiper arm.

although becoming a pro about these isn't in my cards, I do enjoy picking up on the little details here and there, the key location is a change I would not have expected and can't imagine why it took place. thanks for taking a moment, folks.

I figured as much. being tall I could handle less stooping over. but seeing as the 'gate has to pop when you hit the actuator, I don't think I'd like the new location.

anyhow...now that I noticed this one, I've noticed the same on a couple other A/S's that pass through town.

it does. plus the dash button. but no mechanical failsafe, like the ripcord method markmitch put on his dutch door conversion.

it does. plus the dash button, which works only in P or N. the lower doors don't lock but are held closed when the 'gate is closed. but no mechanical failsafe, like the ripcord method markmitch put on his dutch door conversion.

it's a simple grounding switch, so once you access it troubleshooting and repair should be easy. connector #170 is where you'd tap in for a hidden outside button.

Augi, seems to me the right lower door has a lock solenoid, built into the latch, that unlocks when lift gate is unlocked.

nope, at least not on mine. there are no real "locks" but only a chinese puzzle...liftgate latched secures the lower doors. 'gate has relay-activated actuator, lower doors each have a mechanical release. you can in fact tug on the lower right handle and it will try to open but physically cannot with the 'gate down.

This doesn't make sense. Also I can open the lower doors with the hatch shut until the inside lip hits the latched hatch.

Mine might be messed up, so it maybe it's not supposed to be that way. :confusion-shrug:

Well,if van did not have one, there would be no need for the liftgate module,or the liftgate strut switch.I bet you have them, and they are not working.Latch assembly would look like this, the black is the electrical part.---- https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=10163248
