LED 1156 fittment issue and fix - reverse light upgrade

Postby thenextdon13 [OP] » August 27th 2020, 8:49am

Hello,
I thought I would share my experience here.

I had a burned out reverse light, and when i went looking to replace it i noticed the ?philips? LED options at the local store.
When attempting to install the one of these LED bulb, i twisted the base off of the first one by accident trying to turn it into place after it being fully depressed into the socket.
Looking at the design of the LED bulb, it stuck out too wide and interfered with the socket before the keys would allow it to turn.

Then i realized that with the stock 1156 rating of `27 watts, could probably try to find a much brighter than stock LED, and keep stock appearance while getting better lighting for backing up in the forest / etc at night.

I was putting in a rock auto order anyway, looked for the high power 1156 LED options they had available. At the time, the only option was the dorman 1156WHP - but from images the design looked like it may not have the same interference problem as the philips bulb.

The 1156WHP claims to be 720 lumens, while a standard incandescent is supposedly ~400.

When i tried installing the first one of those, i thought i was being careful- but apparently not enough - because i once again twisted the base off of the bulb. Got it warrantied by rockauto.

Then used a rasp/file to hog out the entry of the socket a little bit, allowing the bulbs to compress all of the way to seat.
Works now- sorry, no before/after lighting pictures.

Google hosting doesn't usually work, and it's not working now. Grey circle with a white line in the middle.

Just upload them here - in your post, below the white block in which you type, there are two tabs: one says Options, the other Upload Attachment.

Click Upload Attachment
Click Choose File and navigate to the file on your computer, then double-click it. Now click Add the file to the right of the filename.
Once it's uploaded, put the cursor in your post where you want that photo to go, then click Place inline below the image name.

Thanks for the heads up. It seemed to work on the preview, and on first posting, so i used it.

I'll upload here a bit later tonight, and edit initial posting.

Is the only thing in the way is the "step" from the base to the bottom of the LED "bulb", and it just needs a little more depth? I've been pondering that swap, don't want to be twisting in teh wind.

Correct. The step from the standard metal base to the led section is more square than on the incandescent bulb, and interferes with the socket before the keys allow the bulb to twist. Clearancing the entry of the socket a little fixes the problem.

Thanks. So have you tried it out at night? Does it throw more light out? I've wanted to add a spotlight below the bumper to increase the light on the ground while backing up, but I don't like the look of them dangling below the bumper. If this increases the light on the ground I'm going to do it soon.
