no alt charge and engine idles only

I've got a problem with my 2005 Astro. The battery is not charging and the engine will only idle. It dies if it is accelerated. To test the alternator, I made a jumper harness to energize the alternator L terminal. I ran battery positive through a bulb to the L terminal. It then charged at 14 volts, and the engine ran fine, with full power. I guess the instrument cluster, PLC, or wiring could be the problem. How do I separate/ troubleshoot these?
