Left Rear Brake/Turn causing havoc!!! HELP!!

Postby My1988Astro [OP] » July 20th 2012, 5:07am

Hello Everyone! I haven't been on in a while....been really busy rebuilding my bigger ride (2000 Peterbilt).... Anyways I have a problem with my left rear brake/turn. I have brake and turn signal on the right front and rear. I have manual left turn signal on the front. I do not have left rrear brake or turn signal. I have replaced the light bulb with new......still nothing. I pulled a utility trailer the other day and suddenly I have a turn signal on the left front and the trailer yet still no brake or turn signal on the left rear of the van????

What gives??? This is driving me crazy and causing me to have comversations with myself and other imaginary people in the shop!

A fellow mechanic suggested I have a ground issue with the left rear light fixture? Any thoughts on this???

Thx! 8-)

I concurr with your friend, a ground may be the issue. I had a similar problem not that long ago and it ended up the flasher was messed up. There could be a wire cut through the insulation on the trailer plug and has "an intermittent short" causing the thing to feedback into the flasher... I would say the left turn wire chaffed and is grounded. goodluck my friend!

When a rear bulb goes out in most GM vehicles(open circuit), that side no longer flashes. (BTW- when the front goes out, it flashes faster) When you connect the trailer, the trailer light "takes the place" of the van's tail light, and it then flashes. I'm willing to bet that the right side flashes faster than the left side when the trailer is hooked up.

I'd start by grounding the left tail light socket. If it starts working, make a permanent repair. If not, check for 12 volts @ the socket. If it's there, re-check the ground. If not, trace the wire back until you find where the voltage goes away.

I Know the bulb is new, but that doesn't mean it's good. Have you tested it?

Check was good on the bulb(s). I tried simple first and that didn't work. Gonna try the process you outlined here and will report back.

Thx for the feedback! :chevy:
