Dome light mod question

Dome light mod question

Postby John484 [OP] » August 28th 2012, 2:59am

Ok i have another question regarding that dark mystery electricity. I am turning 03 cargo van into camper. I want to use the 2 dome lights in the back but i dont want the front cab dome on when i do. I was thinking of putting a little rocker switch on each dome light right on the housing that opens and closes the hot wire, and leaving the dome light thumbwheel switch on the dash on all the time. This way i can control each of my 3 dome lights individually. Does this sound feasible?
Thanks

I was looking at doing something likes this, but it got complicated real quick so I just wired in my own rear circuit with 3 way switch's and cut the slider and hatch switches into my circuit.

Yeah jasen i saw your thread while searching. I believe you had issues with the door sensor or something like that? Hopefully my set up will work as i dont think i have sensors that control the cargo area(it's a cargo van). Basically, if the dash thumbwheel is turned on, it has to have juice to the light. And i will put my new switch right on the housing.

Swap yer one bulb dome lights fer a couple of floodlighted dome lights out of the JY, you won't need switches, they come equipped with their own

from the factory. Remove the main bulb in the fixture, and just use the floods. Well, that is what I did.

Recox that is a good idea,before i got this idea i looked at several astros in the jy and didnt see any light setups i liked. I have some LED bulbs coming already so i will just try to do what i talked about.

Dome lights, at least in Gen I vans, are switched GROUND, not switched HOT. It is likely simpler, and perhaps more versatile, to install separate lights to use for camping or load lights, with local switches. They won't be dependant on the switched ground or the dash switch, or the BCM, Maher's favorite computer, in newer vans.

If the dome lights are switched ground, I would think you could wire a switch to ground the domelights straight to the metal somewhere to turn them on and otherwise keep completely normal function such as the lights coming on when opening a door. But never messed with the dome lights other than to swap the bulbs out for LED ones so I don't know for sure.

If you did, every time you turned on one of your dome lights, all the other dome, courtesy, step etc lights would all come on.

It's a bit of a goofy system.
Wire colors:
WHI = Switched Ground
BLK = Unswitched Ground (always ground)
ONG = +12vdc always hot

There's a bit of a weird color usage in:
ONG/BLK (Orange wire, blk stripe) = +12vdc Switched Hot
BLK/ONG (Black wire, ong stripe) = Door pin switches
Open door, switch closes, sending BLK/ONG to ground, turning on lights, notifying ECM/BCM of "Door ajar"

If your door is ajar, then your spare tire is a spoon and your PCV valve is a coffee cup.

Gen 1 vans rule!!! :dance: Do the newer vans have auto shutoff so you don't run your battery dead when you leave the door open?

Out of 6 gen 1's in my family between mom and I none had a shut off. Except it shut off when the battery went dead.

Really? Where any the CL edition? Mine says Astro CL on the dash. You wouldn't think such old vans would have that kind of technology, but mine does.
