headlights go on and off

Postby drw1267 [OP] » February 17th 2009, 1:29pm

while driving headlights will go out, neither high beam or low will work. But all other lights still work, then few minutes later the lights come back on. Is there a relay just for the headlights? If so how do you check it?

Hi drw1267

Their is a head lamp relay in the "Underhood Fuse Block" in the engine compartment. You can check that and if you have any more questions just ask. Thanks.:)

Hi drw1267
You really can't properly with relays with an intermittent like you have. I just find another relay with the same part number and swap it over to check. I find that to be least time consuming for that particular area (relays).

This could also be the headlight switch as well so don't rule that out until it's checked with the others. Do you have the "Ambient Light Sensor" with your vehicle? The easiest way to find this out, is just look at the switch itself. If it says "Auto-Park-Lights" then the sensor will be located in the center defrost grille on the dash. Hope this helps. Please keep us updated, thanks.:)

I had this exact problem in my firebird. It turned out to be that the hot wire for the switch had rubbed against a piece of metal in the dash and grounded. No rhyme or reason as to when it would ground and not.

Have you done any work to the van at all before the problem started?

HI Matrixx,
Yes I have the ambient light sensor in the grill. Also the only work I had done was the front bumper was repainted.
