Instrument Cluster Gauge Speedometer Replacement

Instrument Cluster Gauge Speedometer Replacement

Postby Y2KSAFARI [OP] » August 29th 2013, 6:20pm

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has replaced cluster gauges in Astro or Safari models 2000 and newer.

A friend had a GM truck ('03 maybe) which had a failed speedometer, and while looking into replacements, we discovered that the speedo and some gauges aren't typical assemblies, but small stepper motors instead.

There are repair centers that specialize in repairing instrument clusters, and there are sellers that provide kits of stepper motors for DIY repairs.
I believe the repair process requires removing the hands/pointers from the gauges/speedo, then desoldering the the existing stepper motor(s) and soldering in new replacements and replacing the pointers.

Anyone familiar with this repair?

Thanks
