rear hatch / dutch door electrical release problem solved!!

Postby RadioAnarchy [OP] » September 7th 2013, 5:43pm

on my 1994 Astro Van, the electric release, using either the key in the back,
or the switch on the dash, was intermittent and also weak for a while.
Then it quit working. I had to go inside to the back and use a screwdriver to
open the back door, after removing that one little panel in the
center of the hatch door.

I found the relay board near the spare tire, and found problems with
the voltage levels there. And I get water on the carpets
inside when it rains. This gave me a hint of where to look for
the problem.

I found the problem to be the corroded contacts and wiring that
broke loose from a connector, front passenger side,
located under the carpet, just after that trim piece,
where someone would place their right foot when
sitting there.

I cut the wires and spliced a few inches of wire there to make it
easier, and soldered and taped it all up. Works great now!

hope this is some help out there...

also, disconnect one side of the battery first, or you may blow
a fuse as I did when I unintentionally touched one
of these wires to ground. (edited Sep. 8)

I thought that's how to check for 12 volts, I mean it's not like 110,
where you poke your helper with the wire to find out if it's hot...
