Headlights wont turn off with engine running - switch?

2001 Safari 2wd. Headlights and parking lights will not shut off by light dash switch when engine is running. If you turn the engine off by the ig key, then the lights shut off.

If engine is already off, you CAN turn the headlights and parking lights on and off from the switch though.

Is it a light switch issue or ignition key switch over ride (malfunction) issue?

Daytime Running Lights.

DTL = Daytime Running Lights. A safety feature that many Chevys have. Once you release the parking brake and put it in gear the headlights are on. I have not experimented with mine carefully to know if there is anything you can do to turn them off, short of shutting the engine down. I think they will stay on even if you put it back in park and set the parking brake. Not sure on this....There are other posts describing how to disable this feature, with discussion of the pros and cons, both safety wise and legal, of disabling a safety feature.

OK -Daytime running lights.

Ive driven many astros and owned three. 86,93,96 none of them did this. The switch had full function.

This 2001 Safari is one I am looking to buy. I dont think other 2001's I test drove did this....? - At least I dont remeber that.

Driving around with lights full on is not always wanted - like pulling in a campground at night, or even in the driveway light up my neighbors house.

I read another thread about this here. Didnt know GM put daytime running lights on astros, thought that was a very new thing on cars.

This 2001 Safari even light up when in park - who needs that?

The thread shows the relay for this and you bend over one tab.

So on my 97 and other newer astros that didn't have full on DTR lights in operation- previous owners must have must have rigged them to stay off.

Try pushing the dome overide button 4 times. Works on my 2000.

Mom's pathfinder has them. But Nissan has OFF, DRL postion, parking lights and lights on. Driver has control of whether to use them or not.

I mention this for 2 reasons. First I find it annoying when legal arguments are brought in, as in you shouldn't do it. Because they were made that way. I thought it was a free country. Free to do as your told obviously.

It is obviously legal or Nissan could not sell that feature in their cars. Most cars Have the disable feature.

There's also automatic lights, if you have a little nubby sticking up in your defrost vents. That's the ambient light sensor, which turns on full headlights when ambient light is below a certain level.

The bf's '04 Express work van has on its headlight switch an option to turn off DRLs. I wonder if it could be adapted for an Astro?
