Gas Gauage Not Working

New to the Forum just bought a 98 Astro for work. Been alot of headaches so far. Got it from a friend who never had any problems with it. Of course i get it the brake lines go out two days later the TPS goes haywire and it wont starts and a few other BS problems. Anyway my issue is the gas gauge. The Needle sits at E and doesn't seem to move. is there any other cause aside from fuel pump problems that could cause this? Not really super interested in getting that replaced at the moment. But if that's the issue i may consider it. I was told by a mechanic friend it was probably an electrical issue with the computer blah blah blah. I have a code reader I haven't plugged it in yet but i don't think that would throw a code. Aside from that the thing runs good. Only Small issue is sometimes it hesitates to shift gears until i let up on the gas no big deal. Thanks for the ideas in advance everyone.

That's what my fuel pump did on my 99 right before it died. It was also getting a little louder daily.
