fuel pump only primes sometimes, everything else works

fuel pump only primes sometimes, everything else works

Postby breakurnees [OP] » March 15th 2014, 7:49pm

2001 Safari cranks but won't start sometimes. When it does start, it runs fine and stays running. Most of the time when it starts it will run for days turning over on the first try. Sometimes though, I turn the key, don't hear the fuel pump, and then it cranks but won't start. The horn and all lights work, the gauges all work, battery voltage and oil pressure look fine. It seems like this could be a cold day or dampness problem. It seems to like to start on hot days, but that could be coincidence.

I've searched and find similar threads, but no clear indication of what to start looking for first. The PO says he put in a new fuel pump not long ago. There are some wires with non factory butt connectors near the gas task on a cylinder shaped molex looking thing.

Any help, known problems would be great.

You may be onto something with your observations re: the connectors. Wonder what else got butchered ? MAY not be your problem here but that's where I would start. Good luck!

Should the gas gauge drop to zero when I turn the key?

replacement pumps require a new plug to be wired in, you'll probably have to look at that.

Yeah, the fuel level will drop off, b/c when you go to the START position, it supplies 12v

to the starter, period. When the key drops back to RUN, then 12v is resupplied to all the

accessories. Check out the wiring diagram for any US made vehicle with a keyed ignition

switch system. Usually there will be a BYPASS wire that supplies the ignition system from

the starter solenoid so you get spark in START.

Do fuel pumps die by becoming unreliable at startup? I've never had it die on me while running.

Yes, if you look at my Delphi fuel pump review, you can see the old pump motor and why it stopped working for me. Depending on the electrical motor, the contact points for the brushes vary from 6-8 contact points. If you only have 6 contact points, then the motor can only park in 3 positions to restart the motor. On mine, there was only one place the motor could have parked and started back up , which it didn't and caused my no start condition.

That's not what I wanted to hear, but thanks. Is it reasonable to just replace the strainer, filter and motor? The rest of the assembly is working.

Yes it is. I used to do it working for various shops. E bay sells the pump only. Parts places don't sell it, except the entire Enchillada. Got to be a business and know people to get just the pump. So you can charge for the Whole Enchillada and put in only the pump.
