Loss of Power when too much pedal

Loss of Power when too much pedal

Postby Mike H [OP] » April 12th 2015, 5:46pm

Hey all, I've been in love with this site ever since I got my 97 LT AWD about 2 years ago. I finally officially joined today!

Anyway...I have a small vac leak code. I can accelerate slowly and it seems fine, but when I press the pedal down more than half way it looses power. It also started giving me trouble starting in the rain. Changed cap and rotor and everything except the check engine light was fixed. It starts great, drives great, has power all the way through pedal...2 days later I finished the tune up with plugs and wires. Immediately back to the loss of power issue. Plugs are gaped to .06, nothing visually out of the ordinary. I'm going to check all vacuum lines and change fuel filter today.

Any ideas in the mean time?

oh yea...222k miles and this is the first serious problem so far!

My 98 had similar issues in the rain that drove me crazy for a year or two, turned out I had problems in the O2 sensor wiring... Would also do a leakdown test to make sure your injection unit isn't flooding the intake (another problem I had). :2:

Might check for carbon tracking on the coil, sometimes voltage can arc there as well. Maybe EGR needs to be cleaned?

Well, I think I figured it out...Codes today were - Low MAF - Small evap leak - catalytic converter o2

First : Vacuum line leading down to the canister behind the passenger front wheel was literally crumbling in my hand. - Replaced

Second : Cleaned MAF sensor and replaced air filter. (it was pretty dirty)

Third : Cleaned PCV with carb/choke cleaner

Check engine light is now off, and when I pulled on to the entrance ramp to the highway on my test drive it downshifted and threw me back into my seat! (compared to how it's been driving). Smooth idle, smooth revs, and...the selector switch for the heat changes zones again.
