Best distributor cap?

Best distributor cap?

Postby smokinjoe [OP] » August 15th 2015, 3:46pm

So I am wondering if the quality of dist cap will affect my results.

I found this one that someone on here raved about but its $54
http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/acce ... ibutor+cap

Then rockauto has the acdelco for only $10(!)

I have a store brand advance auto one on now and am wondering if I really believe in it.

Do I try the octopus one?

Every thread on misfire I read it says change cap & rotor again even if you think they are good.

If they make this one for my van is it better? I am trying to improve ignition to fix a misfire and the one I have is store brand.

I figure AC Delco would be an improvement too right?

ACDelco with BRASS (not aluminum) contacts is the typical cap discussed as "best" around here. There may be other brands with brass terminals that are just as good. There are apparently some with crummy plastic that crumbles or doesn't insulate as well or is more prone to developing carbon tracks or something.

It's probably important to remind ourselves that the "Best" cap is the one that's "Good enough". We don't gain performance from a dist cap, no matter what the manufacturers say or the ricers believe. A better cap probably means it lasts longer than a less than better cap.

If there's a dist cap related ignition stumble, probably ANY new cap, no matter what quality, will resolve it for SOME time period. Better caps will keep it resolved longer.

If you're working on your distributor, be sure to do the "Baseplate screen removal" thing that was in the factory service bulletin.

No, they don't make a flat cap for Gen Is. And be glad they don't.

Get a cap with brass terminals. Standard's Blue Streak used to have brass; I have no idea if they do any more, but they worked great on my '93.

I wouldn't use any LAPS house brand. I even had massive problems with NAPA/Echlin caps on my '93 and switched to Blue Streak.

I've read that statement on this forum in a few places (from a couple different folks), and as far as I can tell, AC Delco does not make a cap with brass contacts any more - at least not that I've been able to find....

Well, I'm glad they make SOME cap with brass contacts..... Sadly, no, that style does not fit the Gen2 vans....
