Rear AC switch

Rear AC switch

Postby gejettest [OP] » November 24th 2010, 2:57am

Hello,
1996 GMC Safari, 230,000 miles, anyone have any problems with the rear ac switch? Mine felt a little rough going through the wheel motions, so I decided to take it apart. Found the electrical leads pins and sockets burnt. Is there a bulletin on this? Anyone have a common fix other than buy from the dealer?
On a side note, we have a 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500 as a company vehicle, the cab fan switch went dead. I did some research and sure enough this is a very common problem. Chevy says it isn't a recall because it is not a safety issue. According to some postings, fires have been reported along with strong burning smell. Sure enough, we took our electrical connector apart according to a Chevy S/B and there it was. The fix from Chevy is about 400-600 dollars. AutoZone has the connectors for about 70 dollars.

It's common - across the years. My '93 has the same issue, though mine's a slider switch. I have a replacement pigtail (new) and a good used switch to swap into my van. Bought my AC Delco pigtail from rockauto.com.

Finally a thorough junkyard search yielded a used switch. Bonus is that this switch is a 'new replacement' that someone had spliced in. Great find, put it in, works great.
Attached are 2 photos of my original switch, complete with the burnt contacts.

Surprised it still worked, barely.
