What is the deal with celeron processors

What is the deal with celeron processors

Postby paintdrying [OP] » August 23rd 2011, 1:43am

So I found an acer laptop today, it has an celeron p 4600 processor. Also only has 3 gb of ram. It is 279$. The price seems pretty good for a new laptop. I fileshare a lot of movies and such, surf the web. Nothing that serious. Should I spend a few extra huindred dollars and go with the better processor. I will be living with my new computer at least until our whole infrastructure crumbles.

Celeron proc are good , just not as good as the higher end , if you plan to keep the new laptop for a few years it would be better to get a quad core with 6 gig of ram , there are some websites that sell more affordable laptops ,Id have to look for a list I made , but some were of real good prices
and i5 or i7 processor is better , you should be able to get a min 0f 4 gig ram ,, a guy i know had a new laptop with a quad core and 6 gig ram and paid about 500 for it , he got a real deal ,

A Celeron processor is essentially a dual core processor with some of the functions disabled. For average tasks (as you described) it will be fine. The difference only becomes an issue if you are into serious gaming or running multiple applications simultaneously.

Celeron= a childs ability to do tasks

A 4 core Pentium=a stock broker on the floor of the exchange
A temporary fix usually becomes a permanent solution, therefore it does not exist.

Not to be contrary but a Celeron is basically a Pentium grade that didn't make the grade in testing ,,,kinda long to go into but you can say it like some products that get lowered price because it has "blemishes" , celeron proc do not have as much L2 cache as the higher end cpu, Celeron have been around almost as long as the Pentium , back in the day of the socket 370 celeron could be overclocked to run faster than the pentium and still run cooler for less than 1/2 the price , but overclocking is not recommended for laptops because it increases heat and laptops do not have the cooling capability as a desktop . Hard drives are labeled in a similar way ,, if a line of 500 Gig hard drives are in production , during testing they find some clusters and sectors that have defects so they can block out the bad so that they are not used and then labeled the drive as a 320Gig drive , or a 750 Gig that would have been a 1TB if it had passed QC , it is to keep from having to discard still usable drives , just not at full size capacity

The more cores you have the more the pc can do at the same time ,

how much is your limit to spend ,? and how soon you plan to buy?

I thought this morning was the end of this laptop. But once again it pulled off a miraculous self healing. So tomorrow the people that I have been help move are wanting to give me a high dollar tv and a older laptop. This could be a temporary fix to my computer problems.
I was looking to spend around 400 dollars on a new laptop. But if I see one to good to pass up I could spend 5oo, maybe 550. After walking around best buy I could just not bring myself to buy one of the cheaper models, then having to pay taxes on it after that. I wonder if deals will come back around near thanksgiving?

Also take a look at Newegg.com, they've got a lot of good deals. If you could hold out for some black friday deals I'm sure there'll be something worthwhile, but I'd avoid celerons. I've got a Core 2 Duo in my Asus and I'm already wanting to upgrade to something better.

I agree about newegg.com . and yes the black friday thing should prove promising , some real geat deals were last year at that time , and with the economy problems , will likely be the same again this year. 550 on black friday should get something nice

So what is the problem you have that you think it almost dead , then miraculous self heal,,,sometimes corrupt video drivers can make that seem to happen

In the past it was problems with the drivers, being a dell, the drivers can be tricky. I was always able to sort out the drivers with the factory cd. So yesterday firefox was running in safe mode. I have no idea why it did this. I was able to update firefox to 6.0 and it seemed to fix many little problems I was having.
This dell vostro was built with a cheap mother board that whines. Which after a while will drive you mad. Above everything else that is why I want a new computer. I just get to the point where I do not want to deal with the same problems anymore. I now have money, I want something nicer! I will wait until black friday and buy something nice. I will keep this dell around the house for the kids to play games on.

Re: What is the deal with celeron processors

Postby Phantom » August 26th 2011, 2:23pm

I have 2 dell laptops , i like both of them , the only thing that I don't like is their proprietary tray for the DVD burner , they take a common optical drive and attach a tray to it that can only work on a dell . The computer I am on now is a different style than most people have seen it like a MacMini but not a MAc , the pc is about the size of a single DIN car stereo , I wanted to install an OS that is on a DVD , well I had to install a DVD burner to do it , and that burner came out of one of the dell laptops , after I was finished I went to put it back in the dell , so I put the tray back on the burner to put it back in the dell , and now the dell has issues with it , The burner is perfect but it is the tray that has the issue , but there are no signs of a physical problem , after doing an extensive google search i found that other people who had the same problem had to get a new drive from dell . So when I want to use it with the dell I have it as an external device , I may buy a drive to fit it , or may not as it is only used every once in awhile for automotive diagnostics with OBD , so it sits in the closet most of the time , and any software I need to put on it can be done by connecting the laptop to the network and just transfer whatever is needed.

A whine would be from moving parts such as a hard drive , cpu fan or exhaust fan , you can try using a can of compressed air to blow out dust and may help quiet it down and help it run cooler , then give it fresh clean install of XP when you give it to the kids and use settings that lock things down so the settings don't get skewed by those who are not familiar with computers

I like the other dell better cause it can have the hard drive slide out in 1 second without opening it up ,the optical drive can be swapped out with any new drive with no tray
just features to look for when browsing

You should get at least a quad core cpu ,,,minimum as when windows 8 is released it will only come in 64 bit and 128 bit versions ,,,,32 bit is no more you will want to make sure your new laptop will handle windows 8 if you ever plan to upgrade to the newer OS
even though a dual core can do 64 bit it may not be a good fit with a more comprehensive
128 bit OS

I've got a celeron with 3gb RAM in my work computer (my boss thought he was getting a good deal ) It's okay for word processing and outlook, it's not up to snuff for anything real serious. It struggles with streaming HD video from Hulu or Youtube, it's not the internet connection because I've tested it on my home network, my personal laptop has the same graphics chip and same amount of RAM but with a T4300 CPU, it plays HD video without any trouble. I've installed some 2d CAD packages and they'll actually run just fine, until you get too many lines drawn and the computer really chokes, my personal laptop running the same software with the same drawings does just fine.

I'll agree with the previous posters who said a Celeron is a Pentium that didn't make the grade, but that doesn't mean anything good, it means it's a Pentium that has had a significant portion of the processing power disabled. It's like saying a Dodge Neon and the SRT-4 are built on the same chassis, it's true but the SRT-4 isn't really comparable to a factory stock neon in terms of performance.

I know the AMD processors don't compete with the Intel processors, but they're adequate for the usage you describe and don't cost as much as the Intel processors.

tried the compressed air. I think the damage is already done. I lived out in a very hot and windy desert. A hole the size of a pin head in the wall of my trailer would easily leave an inch of sand on the lid of my laptop. i agree with the harddrive placement. I always take my hard drive and hide it when I am not around. Or I run linux puppy with no harddrive.
Good to know about windows 8. I should try and wait until windows 8 is released because that would mean a better deal on better hardware. With the way the economy is going their is know way to tell just how good of a deal I can get.

The thing on waiting on Windows 8 , may be a wait , i have the M3 version of Win 8 , and the first Beta version may come out in September then there will be few Beta version then the RC Release Candidates then the RTM Release To Manufacturer that is what PC companies use , it hard to say when it will be a final retail release , as the predictions range anywhere from spring of 2012 to November 2012 , Just thought I would mention that since it will not be released to public by Black Friday , If you get a good 4 core or more cpu with at least the capability of a lot of memory you should be good , as long as it can handle a upgrade in memory if you don't get one with it already
