MAC vs. PC

Postby ccookie66 [OP] » October 11th 2012, 3:45am

I have never owned a Mac, but they seem pretty good. This year my school have us all MacBooks, and I must say, they are pretty good. Are they worth $900 or more? I don't think so. You could get a pretty nice PC for that price. The thing I like about the MacBook, (OS X in general) is it looks cool, and there are less widespread viruses. They also seem more simple to use. Personally, I like PCs better. It seems like there are more options. Games too, there are a lot more games for PCs. Sure you gotta deal with viruses, but get an antivirus program, and use common sense, and it will be all good. I don't know, anyone here use an Apple computer? Which do you like better, Mac or PC?

You hit the nail on the head, price, it's a designer thing. Many people don't know how easy it is to build so they buy pre-built. Macs pricing is a step up and they have a pretty GUI. Attractive to those with money to waste, a status symbol I guess. If OSX were that good alot of us with PC would run it too, no thanks...
Mac computers are a total waste as far as I'm concerned because I build. They have no upgrade path that Mac doesn't make you pay for, everything about them is proprietary, not my cup of tea.

Not to make it into a political thing here.. but I look at the comparison as being similar to the differences between the two major political parties. ;)

I don't buy my Macs new, I buy them refurb or used (with a warranty). Save a bunch o'cash that way.

I fix computers on the side and when needed at work. The last thing I want to do at home is fix a computer. I've been very happy with my Macs since my first back in '91, which I still own and still works.

Friend of mine was a service manager at a Jaguar/Toyota dealer. Could take home any car he wanted. He drove a Toyota. Said he fixed Jags all day long and didn't want to have to do it at home, too. He drove a Toyota because he never had to work on it.

If you are tech savvy, a PC is better IMO. Viruses aren't an issue if you know what you're doing. Plus I love building PCs. Built to my exact specifications and more reliable than a branded PC. I can change any component any time because nothing in it is proprietary. I'm running quad-core with 8 GB of ram. I don't even need it but it was cheap to build compared to a branded PC of the same specs.

I don't care what OS or hardware you prefer, just don't say you prefer one over another for some philanthropic reason. I prefer windows because it's what I'm familiar with and Linux because it's cheap (I don't really care about it being free.)

Yeah, I would like a Mac, but they are so freakin expensive, you gotta win the lottery just to buy it! If I had the money, it would be cool to have a Mac. But I have owned and used PCs for all my life, because thats all I can afford. But really, PCs are pretty good. I don't get why people get lots of viruses, I have never had an issue with viruses before.

I've messed with a Mac laptop before for a few days once. I couldn't get into it. Too many things I do on Windows that I can't do on Mac. Same thing with iPhones. I do plenty of things with my Android that an iPhone can't do without being jailbroken. And the phones are cheaper. If you know enough to jailbreak your iPhone, you can figure out Android.

Oh yea. Linux is good for older computers that just do basic things like internet browsing. There are versions (or distros as they call them) that are less resource hungry than Windows and can do all the basic tasks and they have made it easier to install programs with software centers and what not. And even if a program is not in there, it's just a matter of googling how to and copying and pasting the commands into the terminal.

MAC vs PC

Postby Alexander_Rychok » March 19th 2015, 9:52am

One of my favorite shortcuts when I used a Mac was to hold down the Option key when double-clicking on a file or folder--the result would be to cause the underlying drive window to immediately close, thereby reducing clutter.

Is there a similar shortcut for PCs?

MAC is faster, more stable and more expensive. PC is cheap but more vulnerable, if U want it fast it is also expensive.

I like both OS's, but being more familiar with Windows, it's also my preference.
As far as the computer itself, hardware is hardware, why overpay for it?
Biggest difference there is OSX only has to run on the hardware Apple designed for a particular model.
Windows on the other hand, needs to run on hardware by umpteen thousand different manufacturers.

I have seen 10 year old Macs all original including OS and running like a champ. Highly doubtful same age PC would even get to the desktop.
Macs have plenty of issues, don't let anyone tell you different. They all do, if it's man made, it's prone to issues...

I personally think Apple is kind of a scam since they come out with a cell phone that cost six hundred then come out with a better one 7 months later for eight hundred and so on and so forth, its like drugs for some folks and they absolutely have to have the new version. Anyone foolish enough to fall for the apple phone thing to me is just plain dumb. There ain't no freaking way I would pay even close to that for a damn phone. As for there computers I prefer to stick with what I know. Windows is best for me.

If you are using a desktop computer PC is a better deal, you can buiild a great machine for 1000 USD. And these days windows is stable, you will need a good interface with good drivers.

In laptops is more complicated, you can get windows laptops with better specs that those of mac for cheaper but not with better built qualit. When you search for laptops with build quality, screen, trackpad and kb on par with MBP you end with stuff which is as or more expensive that a MBP.

And then there are 2 disadvantages: normally well built, and good specs laptops are heavy, more so than a 15" MBP. Second, to me the point of a laptop is mobility and a windows system can't give good performance without ASIO drivers and for that you need to carry an audio interface (I know there is ASIO4all but to me it just doesn't cut it latency wise). With Mac you get core audio drivers which are pretty good for music production and are native to OSX so you don't need to carry an audio interface.
