First off, I split this topic off from the other topic because we were getting way off topic.

Second, the speed I get at work seems to fluctuate significantly day-to-day. I'm not sure how accurate those speed tests are since they are so many variables that come into play.

Those scans are designed to make you think you have a lot of registry errors and that you need to buy their software to fix it. It is no different than anti-virus companies pop-up ads that tell you have you a virus and claim that you need to buy their crap to fix it.
That said, you could reformat your drive and it would be like new. As long as there is nothing important on the drive go for it. Just remember that favorites, installed software, and personal settings will all be wiped out because they typically reside on the C: drive.

Re: Bandwidth/Speed Tests

Postby Tygre II » September 25th 2009, 6:01pm

I definitely agree with AA on this one and add that frequently they deliver Junkware / Spyware / Malware onto your computer at the same time, which slows you down further. Try a program called CCleaner. It works great. I've used it for years. The price is really good too ($0).

A trick that you might use to speed your connection up a little is rebooting your modem. This works particularly well with DSL modems that seem suddenly slow. Just unplug it for 1 to 5 minutes and plug back in. Some systems like them to be rebooted once in a while, especially when the service is under a year old, or when they're doing work on the system. I've had sites that had dramatic speed increases by doing this. This works for some cable modems, too. Oh, and while you're doing that you might as well reboot everything in line too.

Cautionary Note: Don't do this to a business systems during business hours unless you are instructed to do so. For some reason it pisses off the bosses and the IT department.

My speeds were:
3.1 Mb/s down
3.5 Mb/s up

Maybe I have my cable modem installed upside-down...
