New Purchase: 2002 Astro AWD LS

Postby romeroom [OP] » March 16th 2011, 6:45pm

Just bought a 2002 Astro AWD, 41k miles. Well maintained. No rust. (Still own a 1995, but will be soon selling.)

Wondering if there are any 2002 (or there abouts) owners out there with some advice on things to look for, maintenance tips, etc. Thanks.

Actually, driver's side left arm rest (on the door) has some cracks. There are two cosmetic flaws that I will take close up pictures of and ost them in the hopes that forum members have some suggestions.

By the way, this is a Florida van shipped to Michigan before it was sold.

After 75k miles check the front axle shaft seals with every oil change. When they start leaking, change them right away. I've destroyed the front diffs on two different vans, one cause I didn't notice the leak, the other cause I didn't act fast enough. Seals are cheap and not too difficult to install.

Thanks for the important tip. On my '95, they have been "gently" leaking for quite some time. Because of time constraints and other issues, I've just been monitoring it more than anything else.

Is changing the axle shaft seals a difficult (expensive) job? Is it something that should be done when doing front suspension work?

Not sure how much it would cost to have it done. I've done the job a couple times myself and didn't find it that difficult.
