I'm Totally Impressed

Postby edlps [OP] » February 9th 2017, 4:33am

Here in Victoria B.C. we rarely get snow, however over the past 7 days or so we've had about about 20 inches, our municipality infrastructure for plowing is nil so the roads have been covered with the white stuff and slightly icy as well. My previous work van was an 87 Astro rwd great van but totally sucked in the snow, my travel van, a 92 Safari sucks as well, however my 94 awd Astro work van has been absolutely amazing, this is my first awd vehicle, ive had fwd vehicles (Honda Accord x 2) which was pretty darn good but nothing like the Astro. I havent been stuck at all even on some of the steeper hills and minimal slipping while braking on ice. I am truly impressed with this vehicle

The AWD A/S vans are awesome in the snow, I don't know if it's the weight balance or what, but definitely some of the best snow vehicles around.

Between the weight of the van and the Grabbers on it, I had a tough time getting it to break loose to teach my daughter how to handle losing traction a few years ago- and I've got a one wheel peel open diff.

I just got mine ('93 AWD), and it handles the snow in the UP better than the 4x4 Silverado I had before, and with a pretty meh set of Hankook Optimo tires, no less! If I threw a set of Winterforce tires on, it would be unstoppable.

Did a trip over Steven's Pass a few months ago in my 03 with Hankook ATs. Totally frozen, black ice, the whole deal. It was VERY difficult to get it to do anything fun, I had to go out of my way to make it break lose.
Comparatively I recently did a trek in similar conditions in a new AWD RAV4 and that stupid thing was all over the place, felt more like a free spinning hokey puck than a car on that ice.

Here's what TK421 did bone stock with street tires...need I say more..

I've had a lot of Astro's. Been driving them since 1989. They were all 2WD, and downright scary in snow.

My first AWD one was a used 2002 I bought in 2007. In the first snow storm, it drove like it was literally running on rails. I couldn't believe the difference!

When it finally died in Sept 2016, I started looking for another. In December I found an 05 AWD rear air van with 50,000 legit miles.

AWD makes these trucks a completely different animal in sour weather.

Yup awesome in the snow. Just got back from rescuing my wife from work. Blizzard Cris is just winding down and the roads are aweful.0 She didn't want to drive so I grabbed my neighbor to drive my van back. I watched as he got comfortable behind the wheel and started looking for deep snow to test my van in. He was grinning Like an idiot when he gave me back my keys and said " that is the most sure-footed thing I've ever driven in my life!"

I'd rather drive my AWD Astro in the snow than my 4x4 Jeep Liberty. Any day. And twice on Sunday.
