Van likes to go 30 MPH before it warms up.

Postby deafman [OP] » February 21st 2017, 1:59am

Not sure what topic this goes under, almost went with engine.

This Is Not A Priority.

The van goes too fast after a cold start.
It will go up to 25-30 MPH all by itself for a couple of miles.
It does not accelerate crazy fast like when on cruise control after you have slowed down and hit resume.
It's more like too fast at first and smoothly gets faster until peaking out at 25-30 MPH after going about 1/3 of a mile.
It builds up to that speed and holds it all by itself like it is on a really slow and even resume for cruise control.
All you have to do is put it in gear
I tried lifting the accelerator with my toes and it ignores that. :violence-captureflagblue:

After a couple miles it gets normal.
Or at least after my first stop/restart a couple of miles away.
So it seems like when it gets to operating temp everything acts as it should.

I don't feel in danger but I am sure that my brake$ are working harder.
I live in a small town but if I was in stop and go traffic it would be wanting to go faster than needed.

Could this be idle air control valve or some sensor ?
Throttle need some attention ?

I can't hear it but it feels like it idles all right.
People have said that it sounds good.
But there have been no witnesses while she is doing the morning sprint.
They only hear it after I have driven it awhile.

The only code that I have is P0440 EVAP System No Flow During Purge.
The light came on after getting a full tank with the pump on auto.
I don't remember giving it a shot extra but may have.
Not worried about it after reading up on it.
And the problem that I am posting about existed before this happened.

I bought the van on Halloween could it have become demon possessed somehow ?
Is there some old rule about not swapping titles on Pagan holidays ? :angry-devil:

I can research this problem more but I thought that some of you hot shot mechanics might know what it is of the top of your head.
At least it doesn't run too slow. :auto-layrubber:

Edit : It's a 2002 Rear Wheel Drive.
And it is not an intermittent problem.
It does go away at operating temps.
But every cold start she wants to run fast.

Clean check the IAC Valve it sounds like it is opening for start up and getting stuck.

Look for codes , when the coolant temp sencor went south on mine , it would idle way too fast after warm up , but it was hard to start and would flood it self as well ,also make sure you have no vacuum leaks ,dunno just an idea .

Sounds like a great time for some R&R on the throttle body. Replace the IAC, make sure the spring and cam on the side move free, check the cable for binding, look for vacuum leaks, scrub the black tar off the butterfly, etc.

Make sure it looks something like this when you're done:

Second time in 2 minutes I'm talking about my ex,
I'd recognize her anywhere.

It figures she's holding someone else's throttle body.
What confuses me is how a young guy like CC, way across the country got her photo? She went to SF before we met but in the early eighties I think Jack was still in short pants.
