Potential Van

Postby Superno-van [OP] » February 22nd 2017, 12:21am

I haven't even bought a van yet, but they made me insert a van model and year in order to make an account. I know it sounds dumb, but bottom line, I'm a newbie hoping to make a sweet van. I'm trying to figure out the total pricing first. So I've done some research, and came up with this list:

Van: 4000
Rims: 800
Lift: 1800
Light bar: 300
Tires: 900
Spare tire mount (Like on the backs of jeeps): 400
Roof Rack: 600
Brush/Grille Guard: 600
Total Price: 9200

Obviously, this is a rough estimate. But I just want to know if this is accurate and if there's anything I misjudged the pricing on. Thanks for the help

I would figure less than half of that if you shop around. But if you are planning on buying new/kits for everything, then it looks about right.

Also, the make/model/year information they ask for isn't required to be answered, you can edit it in your profile ucp.php?i=164

Well, depending on what you want, it'll probably closer to half as much...

Van: 3000 (AVG)
Rims: 300
Lift: 4" DIY= $500, OLV Kit $1K
Light bar: 50
Tires: 550
Spare tire mount (Like on the backs of jeeps): if big barn doors, its $80. If dutch doors, custom only, maybe $400
Roof Rack: 150
Brush/Grille Guard: Jeep Bumper $50, fancy one $400 or custom build
Total Price: $4,680 to Infinity

Interestingly enough, my initial thought was "not high enough" for tires, roof rack, rear carrier. I think I'm stickin' with it. Especially bumper(s), roof racks and tire carriers. There just aren't any bolt on's.

I'd be careful with that "cost of the van" as well. Newest one is way past it's life expectancy. It's gonna require a part here and there.

And all, of course, depends on how much of the work you can do yourself.

There is a type of unproven rule when it comes to estimating projects, restorations, etc.
Once you have come to your very best estimate, expect to spend 200-300% of that.
If you actually account accurately for the value of your time, it would scare you.
That said, these projects (especially if you are doing them for yourself) have a type of value that helps to build experience and numerous skills you cannot get elsewhere.

I don't start a repair without an extra $1000 in my pocket and someone else's available truck to drive to LAPS and pick up last minute stuff.

Grease, oil, spraypaint, nuts and bolts, caulk, drill bits, washers/nuts/bolts, degreaser, abrasives, adhesives, wire, terminals, tape, loctite.

Used custom roof rack (they're all custom) $350 plus hardware, paint etc.

4 31" BFG ATs on cheap Summit Racing wagon wheels ~ $1200 plus paint, two lug nut replacements.

Custom (they're all custom) front bumper, the simpler one, no winch, ~ $650 plus hardware, lights, fab up relocate brackets, paint, primer, rust preventer etc.

If you're fabbing, figure in welding gas, MIG wire, grinding wheels etc.

Gain access to a 10-20-30 year old van and you'll surely run into things that you'd better fix while you have it apart. Do a rear bumper, you might find exhaust hangers, shocks, diff vent/gasket/fluid, brake lines, rear door weatherstrip, spare tire hoist etc that needs addressing.

Like Zeb, I overestimate by adding on at least 100%.

Whenever I start building on my own project cars, I throw the budget idea out the window. I start with one part or section at a time then fix or upgrade that. Then save money and move on the the next part or section fix/upgrade and move on, and on, and on, ect.

Like others have said, these vans are getting older most likely need maintenance first. No point in building a awesome lifted rig if it's only running on 5 cylinders, has dex cool mud, sacked out engine mounts ect, and here again the list goes on, and on, and on.
