Advice on a purchase

Postby banielbow [OP] » May 11th 2017, 4:40pm

This 96 High top conversion AWD Safari has 122K and is being sold for $2500. It has some rust on the rear door, but this is "the only issue".

I am looking for my first Safari/Astro to convert into a lifted camper.

Is this the van? Any advice would be very appreciated!

If you are not real familiar with common issues I would check the KBB or NADA site and see if it falls in line with the asking price then read up.....
here or https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=as ... 4536104244.

Have a tech check it over, worth a hundred bucks to not get stuck with a junker. Either way these vans overall are solid and hardy but do have a list of items expected to need attention.

Is the rust "surface" or "through"? Could be a leverage point on price. Even if you can fix it always price(negotiate) as if you will pay to have it repaired.

Drive it? If it wanders it might be something easy or it could need everything on the front end like mine did.

Good luck!

Check for more rust!!!!! Especially around all that ground effects stuff, it likes to hold salt and crap and rust out where you can't see it...don't ask how I know, lol.

Looks like it's sitting awfully low in the rear.

And $2500 seems more than a bit high for a '96. I bought my '02 for less and it only needed plugs and wires.

where are you geographically? somewhere with salt on the roads or in the air?

as i'm sure you know AWD/hi-top is the dream so it's got that going for it! i left a note under the wiper of a similar astro here just begging the dude to sell it to me

miles seem almost conspicuously low but it's not so out of the ordinary that it would be a huge red flag to me

And are you sure its AWD? it doesn't have the badge and I know most of these are RWD.

If so, sounds like a score to me, I wish I had a high top. A little extra head room would go a long way for me, I am 6'3''

Salt, yes.

I'm awaiting the vin to do some look up, but I'm getting a shady vibe from the seller. It is a 3 hour trip for me to to check it out, I'm not committed to do so yet.

i was wondering about the awd tag too.

Definitely not AWD. Doesn't say so on either the driver's door (Gen II) or the rear driver's side door (Gen I).
