GETTING MORE MPG ??????????

Postby clinsenbarth [OP] » July 23rd 2008, 5:34pm

Hi ! Guys and Gals
First post here.
My question is this, what tricks are other members doing to their Astro to get better milage.
I have two Astro's
#1-1993 short cargo, (no rear interior) gets an average of 22 mpg
#2-1999 ext cargo ( no rear interior) gets an average of 16 mpg
Both figures are with the A/C being used and normal big city style driving. (HAULING BUTT)
Looking foward to YOUR replys!
Thanks Charley

Is your 99 a AWD because the mileage stinks. The 93 seems to be getting about as good as your going to get. You could try putting in synthetic oil and making sure that your tires are inflated to the max for less resistance but I doubt that you will get much better mileage maybe 1 or 2 mpg.
Gone to happier grounds.

You could always chop off 900lbs,build a new motor, fill everything with synthetic oil, and keep it to 55mph on the highway.
That's what I did, and I can milk out 30mpg+ if the wind is behind me!

Thanks! Guys!
But there has to be more ideas then air up tires and cut 900 Lb's off. True but LOL!
And YES I love that red Astro pickup.
The 99/2wd is the one I'm going to fix-up, it's got A/C and AM/FM radio as the only frills.
Some of the things I'll do right off the bat or, 3'' in and 2.5'' out Flowmaster 50 series Muffler, remove the stock cooling fan assy and add electric Ford Crown Victoria unit and a free flowing cool air cleaner, install air cleaner where battery is now located and relocate battery in floor behind drivers seat useing a 60's series chevy van floor unit. And one more thing change single headlamp Chevrolet grill to the more aerodynamic GMC with composite headlamps.

Is 16 mpg about standard mileage for a 99 2wd Astro? Truck seems to run like a champ and was very well maintained.
Still would like to hear more ideas!
Thanks Charley

If you want better milige I have a 150 cmf carb you could install, zero to sixty in two years. :rolling:
Unfortunatly driving style has the bigest impact on milege Im getting 12mpg most days 22 if I drive her nicely, like that ever happens. :layrubber:
I am curious as to the gears that are in both vans on my old truck I picked up 12 mpg by installing a altra deep over drive trany i.e. 1000rpm @ 88mph but ya gota have the torque to run that kind of ratio.
Drive your van hard and long she deserves it!

The important thing to remember about Gear Vendors is it is split gearing where there is low/high per gear maxing the engine's torqure. It is not just a overdrive unit.

IMO the cold air intake and exhaust made my mpg go up. Of course like everyone states, driving habits can effect it a lot :driving: . However since your 93 is getting much better gas milage maybe there is something else going on with your newer stro. If it's running like a top then that's a little weird. When is the last time you did a tune up? Oxygen sensors? Catalytic convertor? How many miles are on the 99? :royalty-crown:

Haven't checked the O2 sensor yet in the 99, but I will next week.

The 93 has 358,000 miles, still has the original motor and trans, use's about a half quart of oil between changes. Motor has never been touched, besides plugs, rotor, cap, water pump. The rearend is plum worn out,and has howled for the last 5 years, I've never done any suspension work besides shocks and brake rotors and pads. (runs 180 W gear oil)
When I think back on the maintenance of this truck, I have always changed the oil every 3000 miles useing 10 W 40 Quaker State oil then vacuumed out 2 qts of atf fluid and put in two new quarts, never droped the pan on the trans. Lubed what needed to be lube, suspension, drive shaft
The whole truck is shot, the body has 5000 or more hail dents, no radio, (after replaceing about five of them I gave up)
I had thought about five years ago that the whole thing would just cave in but the thing just keeps on ticking and is so ugly that no one I know wants to ride with me, buts it's been a really great truck. (everyone still wants to use it to move things)
I'll post them gear ratio Monday.

The O2 sensor Iv all was used bosh, the TPS I insalled 3 after market only to corect the problem with a OEM part. So for me the tps is not even a queston but a time saver.

i have a 98 with 145000 on body, 42000 on a 2003 motor and tranny and i am only seeing 16-17 mpg. I took the cat off because it was worn out and i thought i would be seeing a little more than that but i dont know what is going on. stock motor, lowered van. How do you check to see if the 02 sensors are bad if there is no service engine soon light? I am pretty sure there is 145000 on them. Do the 2 rear 02 sensors have anything to do with fuel mixture or are they just to see if the cats working?

The rear o2 sensors are for cat monitoring only, and will not affect fuel consumtion. The front o2 sensors are the real important ones.
With 150k on them, it's prob. time for new ones, as they tend to get slow with age(much like myself!)

There is one thing that most are not thinking about when we post our mpg is hills its not uncommon for new cars around here to get 5mpg less than other places.
Look at the map to compair as well. Here we have steep short hills and a lot of the roads run up and down them insted of down the vallys.

Interesting reading. Almost makes me wonder how my V8 van would do with one of these systems.

Let me know what you guys think. :layrubber:
