Sell or Donate Van

Postby Moorhouse [OP] » February 17th 2019, 8:31pm

I have a 1997 Chevy Astro Van 8 Passenger with 148k miles. I am having fuel injector issues that make it misfire. I am thinking about donating the van to a charity. I need to know if there is any market for a van that is having issues. Paint is a little rough, the interior is in great shape.

Any input would be appreciated

Depends on the condition, what is wrong with it, what you are looking to get out of it, location, etc. The only way to find out is to post it for sale.

Also, entirely possible (likely) that it is not the fuel injectors. It is most often the ignition components, and many mechanics will fail to identify the real problem....

You should post where you are located. Someone may be interested.

150K is low miles for a 97 Astro/Safari.

While misfires can be a bear to track down, they are usually something common.

Ignition, Coil, Spider, pump, etc... Unless it's got burned valves or compression issues, it should be fairly simple to diagnose.

There is a demand for good used Astro/Safari's

I donated a van once thinking I was going to get a nice tax break. I got NOTHING despite the van selling at auction for double what they figured. My finances were such that the donation value didn't help me one bit. So don't let it go for that reason unless you know you're gonna benefit.

Agreed. I once donate a car to charity, only to get nothing out of it at tax time. Didn't help my tax return either. Had I known that, I would have just sold it for next to nothing. It was a running, driving car that just needed a cold start relay replaced, as it didn't like cold weather.

Yep, those tax breaks are better for the ultra wealthy, just like most. If you don't benefit from itemization, don't be looking for a tax benefit from it.

Doesn't mean that it's a loss, esp if you care for the particular charity.
