Road Trip. What tools to bring?

Postby bradaskins [OP] » July 26th 2020, 4:25pm

I'm going to be doing a long road trip in late summer early fall.
I carry a basic set of tools all the time, wrenches, screwdrivers, electrical stuff, sockets, etc...

What are some other items that might come in handy for roadside/parking lot repairs?

What you are carrying now is all you need, you just need to get yourself back on the road, not rebuild an engine...so the wrenches and sockets you use for an everyday trip will be perfect. You need anything else, you can just borrow them from the people you meet on the adventure.

Why don't you list out what is in the toolkit now.

carry some jumper cables and a spare belt for the engine, possibly a flat tire repair kit and a small compressor that plugs into the cig lighter. That's what I am bringing, we hope to drive from NorCal to New Hampshire this fall.

I went to college in NH and lived there for many many years. I live in CO now but NH is one of my favorite places. Enjoy the Fall there it's the best!

Portsmouth and Manchester in the late 1970's. I thoroughly enjoyed both and all points in-between.

I carry a small set of sockets and a couple extensions, an extendable magnet and mirror, assorted smaller line wrenches, an adjustable wrench, an assortment of screwdriver bits (phillips, slotted, torx, allen), needlenose and slip-joint pliers, electrical tape, a digital voltmeter, a few butt connectors, a utility knife, a can of PB Blaster, a small container of (sealed) brake fluid, at least a quart of oil, at least a quart of trans fluid, a cheap flaring kit and tubing cutter, a spare belt, a 12v compressor, a couple schrader valves and a tool, heavy jumper cables, tow strap, rope, bungee cords, a trailer hitch ball wrench and one or two things I’m not remembering. Oh, a six-pack of canned water in a little cooler pouch, a little container of waterproof matches and striker, mylar blanket or two, flashlight and an LED flashing light in place of a flare.

But that’s all normally in the van. I have a little less in the Jeep, but the Jeep is smaller.

Oh - and I’m from CT and NH is my winter happy place.

* Always jumper cables.

* Spare belt is easy... just save your old one. I keep mine with the jack.
Losing a belt will instantly leave you stranded.

* Good matching full size spare tire is ESSENTIAL! Bear in mind an old spare (underneath) can rot out over time, and fail the first time you use it, EVEN WHEN THE LOOK GOOD. It happened to me! Out of town, blew main tire, then blew the spare just a few miles further down the road. It cost me a tow back to where I was staying (I was towing a trailer too) and hunt for replacement tire and replacement spare tire the next day (since the blowouts both happened on a Sunday night).

I now carry 2 spare tires on long out of state trips!
One underneath, one in the van.
A "tire repair kit and compressor" are GREAT to have too, but would not have helped me at all with my 2 blowouts.

Basic tools are fine... everything else you can buy at Walmart or most auto-parts stores.
Carrying large items like alternators, water-pumps, bearings and hubs, fuel pumps, etc.. is pretty much unnecessary. But hey.. if you have them (and the room) then it's up to you. All this stuff is available at the auto-parts store.

* Spare bulbs are handy.
* I always keep a quart of oil and trans fluid on hand.

** Oh more more very good thing to carry! ... a 1 gallon jug of water. Perfect for emergencies, and poured out can double as a gas can (unless you carry a dedicated 1 gallon gas can too.. I do)

* Oh one more "bonus item"... a tow strap!
Easy, inexpensive.
Got me out of a dangerous bind one time!

Safe travels!

Cellphone

And Duct Tape for all the passengers.
.

Well, after all... what would Banacek say ?... “It is only a matter of time before armed citizens, waiting or not for the police, take things into their own hands, fire on the rioters for personal and property prot. & end up hunted like dogs.”

Good list.. but you missed listing "a full size matching spare tire"... and possibly a 2nd spare.
I suppose some won't consider this an extra item or "tool" to bring along.. since it hangs forgotten under the van. But like I said.. a "good" road-worthy spare is essential.. I learned the hard way.

Didn't see "gallon of water" either.
If I was ONLY allowed to bring two items.. these would be them!

A phone and AAA pretty much covers everything else. :D
