Need to change my pump in my 03 Astro cargo van.
I want to cut a hole in the floor above the pump opening in the tank so it is easier to access next time.
I will fit a cover over the opening.
Can anyone see why this would not work or if there would be access issues with hose connecters etc?
Is the pump dead center of the tank?
The sending unit is center in the fuel tank. You would have to cut a large hole so you could snake it thru the opening. The problem is that you would have to cut at least one support rail for the floor. You would have to frame that area so it is still structurally sound.
If this was a truck, I could see it. I just wouldn't recommend it for a van. Maybe I just like working harder than is needed, but I don't consider dropping the fuel tank that big of a deal. If there is a lot of fuel still in it, you can always pump it out. Sure, you will get dirty but its a great time to check the condition of the rear brake line that is above the fuel tank that always rots out.
Hi delikatny
I have thought about that myself, and after careful consideration, decided against it. Astro355 has brought up some good points which was also my decision for not doing it.
The rear brake and fuel lines do need cleaning in that area to prevent them from failing. When I pull my tank out I clean and spray everything down with WD40 and also gives me a chance to clean all the dirt and rocks off on top of the tank which gets collected over a period of time.
The lid would have to be a foot or two long to be able to accomplish this from the top. I guess anything is possible if you really put your mind to it delikatny, but I also didn't like the fact of possible gas fumes entering the interior of the van from that opening, especially in an accident. Just a thought.
Good points and well taken. It just seems cheap the they would design something like this. All my import cars I have had require 10 minutes to take out the pump. I guess the tank will have to come out.
