Safari GT?

Postby Positive P [OP] » March 5th 2009, 12:26am

What years were these things available?
Didn't they have the side louvers?
I found a '95 in a local yard, that looks just like any other EXT, no side louvers, nothing special, but says Safari GT right on the side, The VIN matches. I dunno, I'm going back tomarrow to look for the rear sway bar.

Hi Positive P

I don't really keep up on the specialty vans myself. If you don't see any louvers, then maybe someone has already removed them if the VIN states it is infact a GT model. I would look for signs of any add on components they may have been installed personally. Just a thought.:)

Well from most of the pics I've seen of GT's they had louvers, this thing is all glass, all the way, no place for louvers.
But the Badges say GT, and the vin matches. So I'm goin to check it out tomarrow for the rear sway bar and I'm grabing the Badges.

I got them, all three badges. And yes it does have the rear sway bar, they told me 15.00 bucks for it. Can't wait till pay day.
I don't see how that thing really works, it only attaches to the frame. Unless it's missing something. Oh and I was wrong, it's a '94.
I really like this yard, 40.00 for both rear steel leaves from the newer vans. 50.00 for a 7.685 rear.

Positive, did you mean a 7.625 rearend? I have heard of a 7 5/8", not a 7 11/16". Just wondering.

The rear sway bar should be attached to the body at the loopholes and attached to the rearend by U-bolts.

Yes .625 not .685 don't know where that came from.
Don't know if there's a real difference, I just like newer.
And that must be what was wrong with the van I saw, it was only attached to the body, not the axle housing.
I hope I can get back there to grab it, before it's gone.
Was there any other advantages that the GT has, that I could grab?

I want to add to this. While I was going thru one of my local junkyards, I found an 91 Astro RS. It had been stripped but still had the factory rear sway bar on it. I looked at it and it took me a moment to realize that the swap bar mounts to the axle where the axle is bolted to the leaf springs. At first, I thought the same thing you said that it wasn't hooked up to the rearend. I have never seen one like that. But definitely a good find!

Yeah I had to look at it twice to see. It was difficult to remove. Those little brackets where it bolts to the axle are made of some kind of cast garbage, the driver side one broke in half on me. But I've got a fix for it.

Yeah I got lucky when I went, I found a set of bolt on air bag helper springs, built just for an Astro/Safari. An add on oil cooler and a better hitch that the one I've got. Spent 80.00 on all of it.

Are you going to grab the rear sway bar 355?

I already did. I'm welding the brackets to the undercarriage as we speak. Fortunately for GM, there are holes in the frame were the bolts go but unfortunately for me, they are not threaded. I hate welding upside down.

Yeah I noticed that too, somehow GM had nuts pushed into those holes, I couldn't figure out how.
So you got yours off without breaking those cast brackets on the axle? I think its a stupid design anyway, room for improvement.

Its not my favorite either. But they didn't have much choice with the shocks being mounted the way they are.

When I first saw the van, I soaked the studs with PB Blaster and then came back in a couple hours.

I tried the same thing, but one of them still broke.
But I'm using leaf spring axle perches and long bolts to replace them.
Once I get them on, I'll take pics. Looks like it'll work better.
