Synthetic oil allergy... Heads up.

Postby Sailing_Faith [OP] » July 18th 2013, 2:08am

I have pulled wrenches for years. I used to bathe in the safetyclean tanks in the motorcycle shop I worked it... Bla bla bla.

Like most of us I have ignored al that "safety crap" most of my life.

Well, a couple years ago I was diagnosed with leukemia.

It was scary, but I am ok now. I made it through, there are certain precautions I take now (that we all should probably take) but I am not here to lecture.

Had a weird one today. Changing my synthetic motor oil (penzoil Platnum) I got really nauseous. Was posting earlier while waiting for my oil to drain. I wear gloves to change the oil or other tasks since I have had a scare, but did not do so with this oil change.

I talked to my doctor, and apparently there are a few folks like me with a heightened sensitivity to contact with synthetic motor oil... Not to mention motor oils are considered a carcinogen....

Just a heads up, please consider being careful folks.....

Synthetic oil makes me queasy too. I did my rear and front differentials with synthetic. Just the smell made me gag. And I'm used to bad smells. Gear oil smells like roses compares to syn.

Glad to hear you're doing good.

I wish I had been more careful when I was younger.... The constant bathing in toxic solvents and chemicals during many years of restoring old Pontiacs contributed to a nervous system condition (called Dysautonomia) I have had as my companion since my 30's.... I am still (at age 51) highly sensitive to chemicals and can tolerate only very limited amounts of automobile wrenching activities.... There are actually worse symptoms, too, all of which prompted me to learn a lot more about how our bodies deal with exposure to chemicals....

Basically, we can process toxins up to a point, and once that point is reached, your system goes into overload. Everyone is different, so where the overload point was for me is different than where it is for you, but once it's exceeded, either the body stores the excess toxins somewhere (which frequently results in skin problems, growths, organ disease, tumors and more), or the immune system goes into hyperdrive and eventually burns itself out (resulting in adrenal fatigue, inability to recover from illnesses, organ failure, nervous system issues and more)..... Either way, it's not a pretty sight - sometimes it's recoverable after it happens, and sometimes it's for life....

More info than maybe y'all wanted, but I'd hate for it to happen to you, so here's me encouraging you to think about being careful BEFORE you have no choice in the matter.... If you don't get sick, you probably won't spend much time regretting having worn gloves, mask, whatever's appropriate.....but if you do get sick, well, you get the idea....

Wrench in good health.

As for SailingFaith, I'm glad your doing better.....

Sailing Faith, thanks for the reminder. Had I been wearing gloves last month I may have avoided getting 6 stitches in my finger.

Gavio- Your post rings true with me too, although I'd never thought about it or made a connection before. I worked in a lawn mower shop for years, and after the first year or two I developed sinus allergies. That may or may not be related to my Crohn's flare last year- which may or may not have been the reason I didn't so much as sniffle at all last year.

Wear the protective gear & heed the warnings, folks!
