Headlights Stuck on High Beams!

Postby Datamater [OP] » February 25th 2008, 7:17pm

Greetings -

Long time lurker, 1st time poster here. As the subject line says, my headlights are stuck in the high-beams mode, which is keeping me from inspecting my tired Astro ('89 "shorty" 4.3 w/ 188K miles) and causing much ill will from oncoming drivers. The bulbs are OK (the low-beam filaments are good), as is the 30-amp fuse marked "horn/dmr". The lights dim somewhat when I tug on the multifunction lever, which tells me the problem is somewhere in the switch itself. Problem is, I don't know how to access the switch! I presume it's in the column somewhere.

I tried a search here to no avail, and my Haynes book offers no guidance. Is this a common problem? Will I have to pull the steering wheel, or is there an easier way to access this switch? is this a common GM part? Please advise. Thanks in advance!

Switch is at the bottom of the column and connects to the muliswitch lever via a long metal rod. You just need to pull the plastic cover off the bottom, disconnect the old switch wiring harness, unbolt it, fuss with the lock rod and replace. Twenty minutes laying on your back under the dash cursing at the world is all it takes.

Resolved: Headlights Not Stuck on High Beams!

Postby Datamater [OP] » February 28th 2008, 2:48am

That was it! Actually it took me closer to 45 minutes, but it would've been an hour if I hadn't used the profanity. Thanks!
