AWD Astro van question

Postby tnhillbilly [OP] » May 9th 2009, 4:26pm

I have found a 1999 astro AWD high top conversion van with 140,000 miles on it. I have never dealt with a awd astro and I want some input from owners on these. What are the pros and cons of awd? What kind of fuel mileage can you expect on one of these? What known problems should I look for when I go to look at?
Any input appreciated. Thanks :D

Just got mine, but looking at the service records that the previous owner gave me over the last 10 years. They had to put new U-joints & torsion bars up front. Otherwise it looks like they didn't have a problem at all with the AWD & it works great. Of course this really isn't my personnal experience........

My GM mechanic buddy really likes the Astro Vans, but said the AWD Vans are terrible to change ball joints on.

Pro: Great handling in the winter.

Con: 1-2 mpg hit

Most seem to get right around http://www.fueleconomy.gov/ mileage numbers, but smart driving with a ScanGaugeII or similar can result in significantly better gas mileage.

Don't neglect the front diff, check it for leaks every now and then and repair it right away if it starts leaking. I broke the one in my 2000 but not thinking to check it, and Grumpy's by not acting fast enough.

AWD is awesome! I drift my van regularly in the winter. Although some of the RWD V8 guys probably do that in the summer too :D

Awesome in the snow, and mud. I get 15.5 mpg on 89 octane, and 17 mpg on 91 octane. A little more maint. involved with the transfercase and front diff but well worth it with the way it goes in the snow.

^ x2 (though mine got better mileage). Not only is it better in the snow, it's better in the rain, too. And on the boat ramp ;)
