You gotta do what you gotta do...it's all good

I was too tired to post last night after working on it all day but I did get more done on the engine bay yesterday like replacing the AC evaporator...Anyone who has replaced one knows what a PITA that is..and what the heck was the purpose of that rubber cover on the AC housing that broke apart when I tried to remove it ?
I also attended to a few crazy details like replacing rusty nuts with stainless, blasting and painting rusty metal tabs and brackets, cleaned up dirty hoses etc....

The purpose of that cover is thermal insulation. Without it your A/C system will be cooling the inside of the van a little bit less and the engine compartment and the great outdoors a little bit more. When I changed my evaporator that cover also started to crumble apart (is that rubber?) and I used aluminum tape to hold it back together. It will work without it, but not quite as well. You really should seal the gaps between the freon lines and the evaporator housing to keep your A/C airflow confined to the cabin and the evaporator housing.

I figured it had to be something like that, none of my older vehicles had these and seemed to work OK, but things are heating up. I am in the northeast where temps have rarely gone past mid nineties but this summer we saw temps approach 100, ...

There was no saving it since it broke into so many pieces and I'm sure there's no hope of finding replacements...( a quick search turned up nothing)....I do know that I won't loose any sleep over it

(is that rubber?) it appears to be rubber, it was soft and flexible yet had started to dry rot and become brittle..my parts van is a 2000 and these parts are in worse condition than my 04

I do have a box of 3M strip caulk that I used on the housing halves before reassembly and still need to place a good amount where the lines go through

Moved it out of the way so I could change the oil on the Jeep while my husband and daughter worked on her Xterra.

I did give it a little love yesterday, checking oil and trans fluids, topping off the windshield washer fluid and checking tire air pressure.

Threw some tools and spool of wire in back, and drove it down the little hill,to my well head.Dropped old 4 wire pump wiring into well, for a ground(long story, guy that put my well in many years ago ripped me off) to prevent electrolysis on the pump nipple.Drove back up hill.Went maybe 45 yards. :D

Finished up the work on the abs system...well sorta got the pump new lines master cylinder all back in got everything bled but couldn't get my scan tool to cycle the pump ---wtf?? actually could not see the abs module at all.
Just on a whim I looked at the VIN in the ecu and turns out the VIN doesent match the VIN on the body .....the ECU shows a VIN from an 05 2WD ----doooh. looks like the former owner changed the ecu and never had it reflashed with the right VIN and equipment. Which may be some of the issues. ANyway gonna have to send it down to a friend of mine at a GM dealership and see if it can be reprogrammed of if I have to order a new one. That bites.

Re: What have you done to/with your van today?

Postby Bossman » October 11th 2020, 8:05pm

Today I removed the throttle body to clean it. It needed cleaning badly. Probably the first time it's been cleaned in 205000 miles. Thank you Leeann for your great info & pics from The '05 New Driver page 14! That really helped me out.
Used a new gasket, and also replaced the Idle Air Control valve with a new ACDelco valve. My old one was stuck and it would idle
but sometimes some crud would move in there and stall the engine.
Also replaced the MAP sensor and the Evap purge solenoid valve.
There is an O-ring inside the air intake "hat" that I would like to replace. The parts store does not have a listing for it.
Any suggestions on what to use?
Thanks

Mike

It's not available. Even GM only lists the intake hat by itself, no separate part for the o-ring.

Re: What have you done to/with your van today?

Thank you, Leeann. My O-ring is still fairly pliable so I gave it a thin coating of silicone sealer. It should be OK.
The throttle body cleaning and the new IAC valve cured the stalling at idle. The IAC "counts" are back down to normal.
Drive-ability is so much better.
Thanks again

Mike
