Re: What have you done to/with your van today?

Postby Rod's Trucks » November 16th 2020, 10:37pm

Sent the weekend out in the woods doing radio communications functions for a large high speed car rally.
The new LT 235/75R15 tires were wonderful. Several inches of rain in the lowlands made the dirt roads very muddy; and in the higher elevations we had many inches of fresh snow.

An official observer from the East Coast came up to me and asked where I found the van. He had bought a new late Gen 1 Astro and had it for many years while raising a family, and still loved the Astros.
He was from New York, and said he had not seen an Astro van with no rust in many years.

Today I walked past it twice. I almost took it for a ride to the liquor store, but after a 9 hour round trip to clean battery terminals in a glorified remote control, one of the last things I wanted to do was get into another vehicle and drive some more.

The booze I can live with or without. The thought of getting into another van and driving another foot yesterday was more than I cared to stand. I was velocitized, and my tinnitus was off the charts when I got home. I was done.

I bought a lathe. 9" south bend ~24" center to center with the tailstock in place. Had to separate the table from the lathe to fit in the van. No pictures of getting the lathe out, but here are some of getting the table out. I did clean the top of the table off. The top had the same color green paint as was painted on the bed of the lathe (not on the ways, just the non-functional parts). Needs a belt before I can use it.

Drove it to the LAPS to get brake fluid - we used up what we had working on our daughter's Xterra in the morning.

EDIT: sweet lathe! Looks a lot like my FILs lathe.

Messed around with the Passenger Door Latch, Handle, Key Lock and Deadening material.
Unloaded some things we stuck in for room the last 3-4 weeks.

I finally got the necessary pair of bolts to install the new Energy Suspension rear bump stops.
One of the originals was missing completely, and the other was only the base.
It took all of ten minutes thanks to the basic 2" lift...no jacks or ramps needed. :D

Changed the oil - NAPA oil and Wix filter - on the '05. 4,000 miles and a little dirty, so I'll check it a little earlier next time.

Put some Techron in the tank, too.

Oil and filter. Not too exciting until the hood wouldn't release. Was able to sneak in and remove the two 13mm bolts that hold the latch so I could open the hood. The catch was just sticky due to gunk & rust. Only took a spritz of PB and it's all good. Put on the winter shoes too.

This weekend I did a Harvest Festival & classic car show at the South Florida Fairgrounds in Palm Beach.
Arts & crafts, vendors, rock climbing, bounce houses, petting farm & pony rides, DJ and LIVE band.
Local TV news showed up. Great crowd, blue skies, sunshine, mid-80's... It was good to get out!

I had a service call 4.5 hours away for a hand held transmitter that wasn't working. It worked just fine last week when I replaced the batteries in all 5 transmitters at that branch. I drove down, cleaned the battery contacts, closed the call and drove home.
