Runs, stalls and then won't start

Postby Dsmisfits [OP] » June 2nd 2009, 3:51am

Hello,

Specs 1997 astro van ls with 145k.
I am new to the safari/astro van club. Here's the issue, the car runs fine, then all of a sudden the car stalls randomly(feels like running out of gas). Sometimes the car will start right up after it stalls, and others it wont start at all, I wait 5-10 minutes the car starts up fine. Any help would be great.... I was thinking either fuel pump, TPS(trottle position sensor), or tb injection plug or clogged... Thank in advance..

Start off by checking the fuel filter.

If you can't blow through it, fuel can't flow though it.

I will check this tomorrow, but if it was plugged or blocked then how could I run the car for more than hour with one issue, would'nt a plugged fuel filter be more of an all the time thing rather than a random issue?

Sometimes filters (any of them) have have stuff floating around in it. Eventually, it gets sucked up and closes off the filter while other times it may take longer to do it. Fuel "usually" do this if the van runs out of gas or gets really low. Just one reason why I never let my fuel level get below a 1/4 of a tank.

Hi Dsmisfits

As Astro355 says and what I practice myself, is never run below 1/4 tank of fuel (very important).

Have the dog house off and when this condition occurs again, then check for spark.

Whether the pump was replaced 4 months ago or not isn't as important as what "Name Brand" of pump you used. I have seen new after market pumps fail 2 weeks after install. Pressure should be checked as well. Please keep us updated.

PS: Another area that "could" give problems like that, would be a faulty Crank Position sensor.

Bank 1 is the driver's side of the engine.
Sensor 1 is the first O2 sensor in the exhaust system on that side of the engine.
The O2 sensor should not have any impact when starting a cold engine.

Is regards to the starting and running issues that you have described, I would strongly suggest that you start out by checking the fuel pressure. However, two other possibilties are the high tension lead that goes from the coil to the distributor (factory TSB, intermittent short to trans fill tube bracket) and the ignition module.

Replaced the faulty O2 sensor, still having issues. the Issues start when the car is hot. Here's what I have done, fuel filter, TPS, Checked for sparks(GOOD), egr, pvc, and checked for a short high tension lead, nothing... The next thing is the CPS.. Where is it located? Sorry, but I just bought this van.. Oh and another thing is the vans not throwing any engine codes not that I fixed the O2 sensor....Help............................

Hi Dsmisfits

It's located on the passenger of the front timing cover at the bottom. Another thing to look at would be the MAP Sensor which is located on the passenger intake manifold close to the ignition module and coil bracket. Please keep us updated, thanks.:)

Re: Runs, stalls and then won't start

Postby Dsmisfits [OP] » June 13th 2009, 2:45am

Guys I need some help here. So, I will explain the issue again. When the vehicle is cold it starts and runs fine, then at any give point the car starts to spudder, then dies. If you give it gas it will stall, but if you feather it very lightly it sometimes will stay running. Once it dies, if you try and start it then it just cranks... Come back 10-15 starts up fine and will run again untill the issues starts back up.. The van won't throw a check engine light.

What I have done so far:
Fuel Filter
Check egr and cleaned
PVC Vavle
Sparks plugs are good
Cleaned mass air flow sensor
Replaced bank 1 sensor one O2 sensor
Fuel PSI is around 4 bar which i think is about 58psi or so when running, after I stop the engine stays about 48-53 for a little while.

Please help............

How do I check to see if the blank is good:
Map Sensor
TPS
Ignition Module
CPS

When was the last tune-up done on this vehicle?

The simple way to check for spark is to take the dog house off and induce the problem, once the problem occurs, pull the coil wire off and hold it about a 1/2 an inch from the cap where the wire plugs into while you try to starting the engine and see if you have spark from the coil first, then do a spark plug wire.

It must be a strong blue spark not a weak yellow one. This step must be eliminated first before moving on to the next (spark). Please keep us updated, Thanks.:)

Hi Dsmisfits

What is the fuel pressure at? I think this would be a good time to check that if you have checked everything else in the above mentioned posts.

- 57-62 PSI with ignition on engine off
- A slight drop in pressure on start-up
- No more than a 2 pound drop every 10 minutes when the engine is shut down.

Please keep us updated, Thanks.:)

So, I finally go thte van to stall in my drive way ripped off the engine cover trhough my fuel pressure regulator on it and tried to start the van it the fuel pressure is only 40-45 psi, it won't start and just cranks over but nothing. So, I am going to go with a fuel pump at this point.. Anytime I have check the fuel psi, it's been fine, but this time it was when it was acting up... Thanks....
