I am impressed with my van ON ICE

Postby xit [OP] » December 8th 2013, 5:41pm

I have never driven my van on snow or ice before yesterday. An emergency came up yesterday morning, 5 degrees above 0, I had to make a 40 mile round trip with my van on almost pure ice and packed snow. I didn't know what to expect with the rear wheel drive but I was very happy with the handling, not one slip, in the 40+ miles I saw 6 vehicles in the ditches, most all were pickups. Well, I made it home safe and sound & happy to be off those roads. I hate ice & snow.  One other thing I found out, that thing will run you out with the heat, I turned on both the front and rear heat, that was too much, just went with the front heat on medium.

I don't have any trouble with my worktruck in ice and snow either. (It stays safe in the driveway !)

BTW: We have just about .5" of accumulation as of high noon here. Expecting it to turn to rain

this evening. I'm hoping for a mild winter...we'll see.

We got about 4 in. Of accumulated snow here mixed with below 0 degrees F tempuratures starting on Friday. Didn't get to test out my AWD on the local roads though because it still dies when I give it gas in gear. Was hoping to be able to use it for the trip up north this Christmas. No such luck now

If you are asking me ? I have had a fleet of Astros, all (for simplicity of maintenance) RWD,

and, yes, some of them have been out in ice and snow, however, cautiously driven for conditions.
