What is this noise? (Video)

Postby Crabnife [OP] » January 27th 2010, 8:48pm

I seem to be getting an odd noise that goes along with my rpms. I don't know if this is normal or not. It's there when I'm idling and just increases in pitch and volume during acceleration.

I don't know if it's related or not, but I get a similar noise as a turn the wheel. Could this possibly be something to do with the power steering?

Also, the fan seems really loud as well, if that is the fan I'm hearing.

(Just uploaded the video, so it may not be HD yet. It may help the audio quality once it gets enough time to process)

Work Done - That I know of

70,000 - Rear end replaced with unknown parts
I bought my van and it was stuck in AWD. I had planned to research what the problem was and fix it myself. I got into a very bad car accident and wasn't about to fix anything, but I needed transportation. My buddies dad said he could get a guy to fix it for me. Without diagnosing anything he just replaces the rear. It fixed nothing. Turns out, all it needed was a transfer case fluid change.

80,000 - Installed Upgraded Alternator from DB Electrical
Original alternator was making noise so I decided to replace it. Had the new one sent back under warranty after 2 months. Started to make horrible groaning noises and output 15-16v. Reinstalled new a few weeks ago, have had no problems.

85,000 - Replaced Idler Pulley, Belt Tensioner Pulley, Serpentine Belt, and changed Transfer Case Fluid again (AutoTrac II)

Supercharger is low on oil.... :P
Sounds like power steering to me.....its really hard with a video. If it does it while you idle you could take the belt off and see if the noise goes away....just don't overheat the motor or drain your battery. Kind of risky. The only time V-belt systems were ever nice to have...diagnosing stuff and deleting stuff really easy.
Any leaks? Looks like there is a trail coming out of your driveway and up the stree the way you went the first time.

You have the same gear ratios in the front and rear end correct?

That sounds like power steering does the steering feel stiff at idle

I do have a small leak, it's on the transmission. It's a real slow drip. The marks you saw were water. I've got 2 dips that store water in my driveway.

I can only assume the ratios are the same. From what I was told the replacement rear was from an astro/safari from a similar year.

The steering isn't stiff. It might be the slightest bit more firm at idle.

I second taking the serpentine belt off and running the engine. You don't need to run it for very long to know if that is the problem or not. Did you also have the doghouse off recently?

astroturf, you make a good point. I haven't really done much about it myself, depending a little too much on you guys.

I just checked the fluid cold and am waiting on my van to warm up right now. The fluid was a light brown color and smelled a little burnt. Is there a way to flush it?

I have never had the dog house off myself.

I like the idea of taking off the belt. Can I connect my battery to another running vehicle during this as a precaution? Or is that a bad idea?

Nah, You will be fine running it for a short period of time (less than 5 minutes) without the belt. Are you asking about the power steering fluid?

Yeah, the power steering fluid was a low, light brown, and smelled burnt.

Could that be causing the noise?
Should I just add more fluid or do I need to do some sort of flush?
Or is this the kinda thing that ruins a pump?

Really, the first thing you should do is run it without the belt. That will tell you if its related to the accessory setup or something else.

If you fill it up with fluid now did the sound go away?

My '92 pump ran about 2 minutes without fluid as the cooler spit it all out....man it was loud.....now sometimes I swear the pump is whining more then it should, but it still works fine.

I have a 96 Astro which has the same noise as yours, I found a GM Tsb ( 02-02-32-005A) which states:-
"Some customers may comment on a whine noise coming from the power steering while turning or braking."
It refers to 1996-2002 M/L Astro & Safari.
The fix for this, it states is a replacement power brake booster inlet hose part No. 15094588 or Delco 176-1116
This may be the problem you are describing but it could be worth asking a GM dealer about it first as the replacement hose is around $51 and you have to drain, fill and bleed the PS after changing it.
My van has been making the noise for couple of years now and has not got any worse, on mine It was not the alternator, aircon compressor or water pump as one by one they all failed during the year and have been replaced. Hope this helps a little, but If you do find the problem please drop a reply as to what you found.

Okay, after all that snow and a surgery I finally have an update.
I took your advice. Started it without the belt and it sounded like a dream. So smooth and quiet.

I went out and bought a siphon pump. I had intended to get a small electric one, but this works really well.

Image

I pumped out my reservoir and filled it with fresh fluid twice and this is what I ended up with.

Image
Image
Image
Image

Being that power steering fluid is supposed to be a light brownish clear sort of color, I'd say this stuff is a bit nasty.

Image

I am planning on doing this until the fluid I pump out is the correct color (only had one quart and it was 10pm when I started). The noise doesn't seem to be changing at all yet. That hose is an idea. I'm just afraid that it won't change the noise and it would have been better to spend that $50 on a new pump.

I had the clutch on the fan seize up one time and it sounded something like that. Might be the pump, but check the clutch just in case, alot cheaper than a pump!

How would I go about checking this fan clutch out? The only things I know are the ones I have experienced first hand about these vans (only vehicle I've ever really worked on).
