What's my van worth?

Postby PJorgen [OP] » September 12th 2014, 6:36pm

I'm looking at selling the Safari to get a pickup/camper rig so my wife will be more comfortable on our camping trips. Anyway, pricing for these is all over the place! NADA tells me my van is worth 2500-3000 as a trade-in but I see them selling over $10k in some cases.

So, I've got a 2003 Safari passenger model, base trim level with AWD. About 133,000 miles with a lot of recent service; new ball joints, idler arms, injector spider, distributor, etc. Slightly oversized almost new tires but no lift, Helwig rear anti-sway. Interior is pretty much gutted for camping. I'm in the SF Bay Area of Cali.

All opinions and comments welcome.

Re: What's my van worth?

Just because they're selling for 10 grand doesn't mean that's what they are actually sold for, so that isn't the best idea for pricing. I'd watch cl and ebay for similar vehicles (age, miles, condition, etc.) and see what moves and what doesn't. It's how I figured out the best price vs condition when I was looking for my van.

As for yours, you have new parts & tires, but does the A/C work, is the check engine light on? How does it drive? Sluggish, peppy, pulls to the right? Also, what do you mean by "gutted interior"? Just have the seats removed, or did you rip out the side panels, carpeting, and seatbelts?

Not sure of desire & pricing out in Cali, but in Milwaukee they're usually sold pretty quickly at the lower prices (think hours), the high priced dealer ones will hang around for months. Around here, rusted, beat, high mileage Astro go for $500-1500, the nicer, newer ones go for $2500-3500, 4-5 grand might be topping it out. Of course, dealers will advertise with prices like $6-7k, but you probably could get them down to 4 1/2 or so.

I don't know if you included pics with your post, they don't show on my computer (dang company firewalls) so I have no idea how your van looks. Pics always help out.

Icebergs advice is solid, here's what I'd add.... I live in the Bay Area and prices here are generally higher, enough so that it was cheaper for me to go to Portland to buy my van and drive it home - but that's 'cuz I wanted AWD.... The RWD vans are more common.... I watched a lot of vans on CL and other places that were for sale for high prices, and they stayed for sale for months - one I saw is even STILL for sale a year later... SO even in high-priced Cali, people are looking for fair prices.... If you're in a hurry, price it cheap and watch it drive away tomorrow - if you have more time, watch the ads over time to see what actually sells, then price accordingly.....

Just as a rough guess, if you wrote an ad that said exactly what you wrote in your post, I'd say I would call you up to come look if the asking price were under $5k.... Maybe higher if the pictures looked really nice......Whether I would buy, and what I would pay, obviously would depend on what I saw when I got to your house.... :2: :2: :2:

Good luck

Thanks guys, lotsa good advice. The van looks good from the outside, straight body no big dings, Yakima roof rack. A/C recently recharged, new encoder motor and control module for transfer case. As I mentioned the interior is pretty empty, no rear seats or belts, carpet has been replaced with a rubber mat. Do you think that will significantly decrease the value? It can't be used as a passenger van any longer, only a camper or work truck.

If I could get $4-5k I'd sell it in a minute, guess I'll take some pics and post it here and

My quick guess is that on CL, you'd sell it FAST if priced around $4k - mileage is relatively low and you've done a lot of work on it already..... I know I'm not the only person who's bought one with the intention of stripping it down to make a camper or a cargo hauler, so to the right buyer, I don't think that's an issue.... WIsh you'd had it for sale back when I was looking...

I paid $3750 for my 04 Safari AWD with 150k, but had to go to Portland to get it (and that was a year ago, so these vans were all a year newer)...

Dealing in cars all my life 3 things determine value, condition, condition, condition. No matter what NADA gives as value it's ben my eperience people will pay more for vehicles in exceptional condition. Sadly, repair and replacement parts due to wear do not add any value to a vehicle. I just sold a 1989 GMC Van with 44k miles in mint cond. for $5,000.00.

Hey PJorgen, I think you'd be able to get 4-5+k easy here in the Bay Area. Lots of folks out here want a weekend camper rig/ burning man camper/ adventure mobile and yours would be a good platform to start with. The updated service and the 03+ is a definite plus. Of course, it would be a lot easier if you'd have the interior in tact but I think you wouldn't be able to have any trouble finding right person. AWD is extremely rare out here.. I've been following the Bay Area/Sac/Stockton/SLO CL intently just to see whats out there and there haven't been a decent, newer AWD listing for the last few months. A few very beat up ones and some cargo awds here or there is all that I see.

Hope that helps. Chuck

In California people get crazy when they sell a vehicle so ads here are very high in my opinion. The same vehicles in the same condition on the east cost are must lower priced. Its seems as though they think what they own is sooooo much better then what other people own. then again the cost of living here is way higher then any where else I have lived too! My advice: ask what you think it will fetch and go lower every two weeks. My 93 AWD sold quick due to it being AWD and I sold it for 600 more then we paid at a dealership (used)

Mark: tell me about it. I moved back here from the South, and things have just gotten insane! In a good (or bad) way, depending on what you're looking for...

A little off topic here, but I think there's a floor on the prices for any junky running pre-obd older car that needs TLC at something like 1.5-2k for the Bay Area proper. Any lower you'd be competing with the CARB buy back that's a guaranteed 1k or 1.5k. Anything newer or better would only be more than that that.. sooo you see lots of junk early 90s economy cars with 200k+ miles asking 2000... well because they can, and people will pay them, unfortunately (or fortunately, depending if you're a buyer or seller) . My first car was a 91 civic that I paid 900 for, 15 years ago. That same car will go for 1500 now if it runs well. Supply and demand.
