2001 safari awd new owner

Just purchased my 2001 safari awd w/160,000m. constant whinning noise at or near fuel tank.Pump going out? Maybe just dirty? If replaced is brand name important? Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the board. A Delphi pump will serve you best. How long on your fuel filter service? Try that first, Then diagnose the issue, Don't just throw parts at it. Again Welcome. Jim

X2 on what astroturf said....fuel filter first.

Could just be a loud fuel pump....my '92 pump is louder then my '96 and my '92 has been that loud since I got it(1 yr). You can hear my pump from about 10ft away if your listening for it.

The pump in my 97 whines like a banshee, always has. Delco or Delphi is what you want if you replace it.

I read somewhere that keeping the tank above 1/4 full will keep the pump immersed and properly cooled. If you are trying to keep your pump alive, you may want to keep the tank over 1/4 full. The pump noise may also be louder when it isn't fully immersed.

I'm making a habit of refueling at 1/4 tank as opposed to using the low fuel light. It's easy enough, and if it helps reduce fuel pump stress, totally worthwhile.

^X2 Good info! I religiously keep both my Vans above 1/4 tank. The '92 in on its 3rd fuel pump, so I definatly believe in this!

my old savana did that too. kept driving like that for thousands of kms. if the tank was less than 1/2, it was much louder so i tried to keep it full most of the time.
