It's been 10 years since the last 2005 Astro/Safari ....

Postby Meterpig [OP] » February 15th 2015, 9:21pm

It's been a decade, actually a little more given the way year models are rolled out, since GM gave the astro/safari platform the old heave ho. What have we learned since then? The astro remains popular with many folks to this day. What about the competing platforms? That would be the Aerostar and the town and country. The astro continues to be rebuilt and remade by users while the aerostar and the Chrysler make mark their final days to the junk yards.

I had thought the astro was in the same boat...but it's hard to find anything newer than 99 in the local pick and pull yard.

What else have we learned? Rear air condition and rear heat are valuable in the hot/cold states. Dutch doors are evil and barn doors are cool. We also learned that while the V6 has potential (boat motors anyone?), in GM's hands, they made it a dog prompting many to drop in the larger brother, the venerable V8.

When I look around the country at clean 03-05 passengers with rear heat, AC minus the road salt, they are going for a premium. Who pays more than 8k for a 10 year old GM product? I would.

Then there are those that "camperize" their astro/safari's. Spending thousands over the base value with nary a care despite the downsides. GM attempted to right a wrong with the AWD Express van. the 5.3L motor is what every 5.7L wishes it were with deeper skirts and endless HP.

What if GM had reimagined the astro with a 5.3L, rack and pinion, a BW transfer case, an electric fan, a rear sway bar and a slightly taller body and maybe just a bit wide. Not express van wide..just a bit. I don't know...vans were becoming less cool back then, the crossover was just coming on, the SUV was king and all that.

So, it's been 10 years...and here we are. What's out there that compares? Who makes a midsize van today that has AWD? Nothing in my price range.

I for one, really like my dutch door setup.

And as a 19 year old, that dog of an engine can still get me in heaps of trouble. I often find myself glancing down at the speedo and saying "Oops". Then I realize just how slow the speed limit is.

These vans are awesome. Here in the rust belt their days are numbered. If you want something decent you will have to pay. I hate to buy a van with perfect interior only to destroy it for work.
The value of an item is what people are willing to pay for it. These vans, in good condition are valuable. If you have not already figured it out. Their is nothing to replace the astro. Never will be. The astro is from a better time in our country. Now, you are going to pay through the nose for junk.

Love em' too...

Just not as much as I used to. Don't know why - things just have changed since last year.
Don't know when I'll get the damn thing done. Hardly care - this cold and our health.
Hating it right now.

My Goodness - A LOT has CHANGED. Last year did suck - almost embarrassed
by the remarks now.
These Vans just can not be Beat - as far as the "Whole Package".
Not to mention it's customization capabilities - seen and unseen.
Which pushes the Imagination of their owners to quite impressive results.

Me ? ...Still Working on the "Bucket / TO DO" List - just like when I joined up here.
And of course, Dreaming of more Peppyness.

Yeah, I know of no other van that can compete. Maybe the Merc Vito, but it's too expensive.

I love the Dutch Doors on my Astro. Nothing like releasing those hinges on the lower doors and putting a really big piece of cargo in there while others watch and wish their vans or SUV's could do that.

I think the Vito is the closest replacement for the Astro, but agree that the price is just too high. If I was to replace the Astro anytime soon, it would most likely be with a used 4WD Nissan Armada. It's one of the most comfortable vehicles I've driven and although it has nowhere near the cargo room of an Astro, I could make it work. The biggest drawback is that the gas mileage is actually worse than the Astro if you have the V8 Armada, but it does make for a great drive on a roadtrip.

New Engine at 140,000 miles due to intake gasket failure. Hoping to at least double that.
