State Farm tells me my VIN isn't for my Astro

Postby jsvr-4 [OP] » July 6th 2010, 5:11pm

When I got my '99 Astro insured, the lady at State Farm said the system wasn't taking the VIN for a '99 Astro. She took a pic of the vin for their records and I paid my insurance and walked out.

Today she called me back and apparently the State Farm corporate office told her to verify the VIN # again because it doesn't belong to a '99 Astro.

Is there any way to verify whether or not the VIN on this car is legit?

Am I riding around in stolen property? I haven't taken it to the BMV yet to get plates (had it 2 weeks).

Does the BMV have a system that checks the VIN too?

.... worried a bought a stolen van. Which sux because this is my first Astro and it kicks ***.

You can call a dealer with the vin and they could give you some info.

The second call I would make would be to my Local Police Department.

Good Luck. Hope it Works Out.

I have State Farm too and had the same problem with my 1985.After the second visit to the insurance office,I told them unless they resolved the problem,I was going to go else where for my insurance business.I've been with them for I would guess 30yrs.Bingo,suddenly the issue disappeared.

I had a title from Tn which matched the numbers on the van and DMV has issued plates for.I would guess State Farm's home office records are not the best.I have heard of problems like this from them before.

I was thinking about taking it to the police station. But right now it's my daily driver right now

Would they take it away from me if it comes up stolen or with the VIN of an '85 Lumina?

My auto insurance just sent me a letter saying the VIN on my 94 safari was not for my van. The state says it's OK though.

I think the Insurance Companies, who all use the same data base, have a glitch. I sure hope that your problem is just a glitch and not that it is stolen.

Good luck, Keith

Who did you buy it from? Private sale or through a dealer/lot? I think Id double check that they got the right number. You know how reading off a credit card # to someone on the phone, they sometimes get the numbers switched.

If your going to take to the Police Station, bring a friend. Someone needs to take possesion of your belongings. Just Kidding!

Read what I wrote. To change vin numbers you would have to take out the windshield which would be a real PITA.

I bought it from a used car dealer from a not so nice part of town.

He had the title with matching VIN.

My son would be devastated if they took The Smackwagon away from us! He's had a couple weeks to fall in love with it, and the Mario/Luigi/Goomba decals are on the way! (He loves playing Mario on Nintendo Wii at 3 years old... Daddy is so proud.)

Gonna maybe do a carfax and see what happens.

Definately run your VIN in Carfax to see what comes up. It's free to identify the vehicle and you don't necessarily have to order a report.

One thing that could have happened is that you have a GMC/Pontiac VIN vs. having a Chevrolet VIN as the result of a swapped out dash during production. Does the VIN on the driver's door B-pillar match what's on the dash? Some of the former factory workers on this forum have said that there have been instances when Chevrolet and GMC parts accidentally get on the opposite vehicles and they end up correcting it after the van rolls off of the assembly line. For all you know, there is probably some schmuck with your vin on his Safari getting the same hassle.

The vin is also stamped on the body near the passenger side rear leaf spring if you need another place to verify it.

But for the most part, I think that you are OK also. As long as you didn't steal it and the car lot didn't steal it or receive it as stolen property. It's just something that raises a flag so they can catch thieves who steal cars on a grand scale. Most of these shady car lots get the majority of their vehicles from impound auctions and charities.

Ok.. so if 3 people in the same forum have had the same problem, then there is obviously a big problem with their source of the data.

But any time I've requested a quote, they have always asked for my VIN first.. and then they verified it by saying, "Ok, Mr. Anderson, is this for the 92 GMC?" so that there would be no question about it.

I'd be interested in knowing what was coming up when they said that your VIN is not for your car.

They said that the "L" in the VIN was not supposed to be there. They asked me two times, through the USPS and asked for a photo. After the photo, they said they would accept it, made a comment in my file and said "thanks." In the second letter, after the photo, they required me to call them. It was during the call that they said that maybe it was a glitch with the data base.

My van is a conversion van, I wonder if that has something to do with it? Oh well, one just never knows. I sure hope, knock on wood, if there is an accident, they don't bock about it.

I did mine online (92 Safari with Progressive.com) and had no problem...wasn't even in my name yet either, just wanted to get it home and have no problems with the cops about no insurance atleast.

I went to http://www.decodethis.com/ and put my VIN in came up with the same info I knew about, give it a whirl...unless you have gotten it figured out already.
