curious about MPGs

Postby Uncle Fester [OP] » July 13th 2010, 6:04am

Well, I have owned my Astro about 6 or 7 months now, and I have watched my MPGs fairly close to see what I get. My daily drive includes :
1) drive wife to work (50 high way miles round trip)
2) run various errands IN town (20 miles or so)
3) pick up wife from work (50 high way miles round trip)
4) drive son to work (20 city miles round trip)
5) pick up son from work (20 city miles round trip)

total daily average miles 160 miles a day, 5 days a week (800 miles a week) plus week end driving (50 miles or so) {my poor van!}

with all this driving, I am averaging 19.5 to 20 MPG with speeds running 70MPH on highway and 40ish in town, how does this compare to your MPGs?

Those are very good numbers Fester.

My lifetime MPG average over 43,928 miles is 18.1 mpg.

Again your numbers are very good.

Mine's a 94 AWD Safari but having only checked the mileage twice so far, I'm looking forward to getting a more accurate average with another thousand miles coming up.

'94 AWD high top with 750 lbs. extra weight.

14.27 MPG mostly in hills, on the freeway. Since Feb. I have put on 500 miles. Now many, but I don't use the van much.

Cool, thanks for the input everyone, I guess I am doing something right, but I do not know what it is... I abuse this van so bad, no tune up YET, not even a air filter

I am guessing when I do a new cap , rotor, wires , plugs, air filter and hotter coil these numbers will come up some (maybe?) we will see.

The info everyone has given me, I love my little Astro even more! lol Wolf Den, my 87 E-150 show van, (460 FI, E4OD and 4.10 geared Dana 70 dually rear end) only gets 12ish at best, so 20 is GREAT! If you wanna see Wolf Den, check her out here. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3298347

Oh just FYI, mine is a 92 2wd CL with TBI (Z code) engine, TOTALLY STOCK and 3.55 rear. :2:

Update on my mileage of right at 19mpg with the van loaded to the gills. I'm in Kamloops now and should drop down into the desert of central Washington sometime tomorrow.

Off topic, but somewhat related; how do I get into the high mileage club with my 243,000 miles?

ya have 7000 miles to go, then submit your pic of the odometer to $uperjoe. Good luck, and congrats. I have 22000 to go and I'll be there too!!!!!! ( If I don't get BAKED driving without A/C in the Texas heat first.) Oh yeah, this tank, I'm at 18.6 average, but I've only gotten to 1/2 tank so far.

Hey, this is not fair :( my 85 is on its 3rd motor...od shows 45000. So Im gonna start the low mileage club. :) ha ha, I win.
Now about that gas mileage. My van is missing the pre heater tube from manifold to air cleaner. My nephew....race car builder and 20 years parts dept manager said "do not put it on because that puts hot air into the carb which is not good for it. Cold air is best both for performance and gas mileage". What do you guys think? He said run it with and without and see for yourself.

Well that'll still take me a bit longer I suppose, but I'll have fun doing it!

I'm not in Texas but not only does my AC not work, my heater controls don't either, so all the air seeping through is hot and the best I can do is redirect it to the defogger. At least my windshield is clear!

I'd be bypassing that heater core for the summer, unless you get a lotta rain and need the "old skool no a/c defrost " Both temp senders on mine were reading 108 and 109 today...having the heater on too.... I don't wanna think about it...just the blower motor running was blowing in hot air.

Actually Alaska gets a lot closer to the sun during the summer and it can get hot in an endless manner when the sun keeps pounding directly on you up to 11:30 at night!

Actually it is ihatemybike to whom you would send a pic and ask to be admitted into the 1/4 million mile group. SuperJoe is the V8 group leader.

Off topic, but somewhat related; how do I get into the high mileage club with my 243,000 miles?

Actually it is ihatemybike to whom you would send a pic and ask to be admitted into the 1/4 million mile group. SuperJoe is the V8 group leader.

Thanks for the proper info, although it's still a ways off, unless I end up doing more driving than I'd been planning this summer!
252,000 miles and counting!

Nu85 You should also contact ihatemybike with a picture of you odometer. For entry into the 1/4 million mile group. Jim

OOPS, the Turfman's correct, sorry for the mistake.
Figure out the problem before buying parts
