Help! - Need a van in Reno, NV inspected before purchase

Postby ihatemybike [OP] » July 21st 2015, 10:01pm

Found a 2004 Astro AWD on Craigslist in Reno, NV that I'm interested in. Champion Chevrolet in Reno won't let me pay for the 27 point inspection over the phone. Does anyone live in the Reno area that would be willing to check the van over for me?

Should the van check out, I plan on taking Amtrak from Chicago to Reno and driving back.

That sounds really odd of the dealer to require you to pay for an inspection in person.

When I was shopping for my van, I had a couple prospects checked out by independent inspection services.... Found 'em through online searches... They inspect way more than the dealer would and were more than happy to deal with me long distance...

The first was such a nice guy, he picked the van up at the dealer's lot, drove it back his shop, called me and said "I don't think you should buy this 'cuz of this, this, and this" and didn't even charge me since he hadn't done the "official" inspection yet....

Second one was the keeper, and is turning out to be a good van...

Good luck whatever happens...

I don't think a dealer pre-inspection is worth a poo anyway. All they do is look at the recommended service intervals and say "You should have this and this and this done". Then they throw in something like "Oil noted on the underside of the engine/trans area - recommend replacing rear main seal (or entire engine, transmission whatever)"

I realize that doesn't really help with the problem in this scenario.

What's the cost of travling out there do check it personally? Sometimes you can fly across the US really cheap.

It's not the cost of getting out there, it's the time off work, especially if the van proves to be not worth it.

Van was sold before a solution was found. We'll be traveling through the PNW in Sept and I'll be looking for vans along our route. Maybe I'll find something to take home with us.

Hello, I am selling my 2004 awd chevy Astro van. It's in very good to excellent condition. It has a DVD movie entertainment center, almost new tires, 3rd row seating. It has only been 104,500 miles and everything works as it should. It has decals on the exterior that we are in the process of removing
How many sensors, fuses or computers does a Bw4472 need? Zero.

That one ticks a lot of boxes for me. Think I still have a cousin in the Denver area too.

Wonder what the decals have done to the paint.

The 03 and newer vans go a lot going for them. Still a GM product though.
