What's your MPG?

Postby DOcean [OP] » May 22nd 2008, 5:19am

I searched the forum for MPG info and stumbled upon a few claiming 24+ mpg. I'm getting not-quite 15mpg in my '02. Van is running perfect and has only 42k mi. The van is used as a service vehicle and I am carrying around about 600 lbs. of tools, cabinets, materials, etc. 50/50 city streets/freeway.

So...what's your MPG, and please describe your driving situation. :confused3:

My 1986 swb 2wd 4.3l was when I bought it 25k miles was averaging 18-30 mpg. I live in NY state in a hilly area with about 850lbs of extra weight local not highway. I know some will think 30 mpg is imposible but I tested the mileage as a way to annoy a fellow student that thought 34 mpg was good for a honda civic.

:biglaugh:
This was tested with a graduated cylinder on a predeturmind corse with two steep hills as part of the test. However I have installed a 5.7l v8 after that and only get 16 mpg if I dont push it hard. :layrubber:
hope it helps.

I use my Safari as a truck and as a workhorse. The rear seats are taken out.I have hauled all kinds of crap in this thing, but even when empty, the best I can do is 16.2 MPG combined highway/city.The (remanfactured) engine has about 26K miles on it and uses synthetic oil.

I get an average of 16 with the new V-8..around town (same as I got w/the old 155k on the odometer V-6). But on the hyway. I get 20+. Hauling an average of 600 plus me, and occasional towing of a 1600Lb boat.
Every long trip I make (average 1 per month) the cost of my V-8 install is coming back to me.
This is ALL by driving carefully and NOT using the cruise.
If I put my boot in it, I drop like a rock to under 13 mpg..ahhh well.

Funny how someone was making fun of my van and bragging how his civic got 35mpg. I was like ya, but who is hauling this amp for you. (I was helping him move a guitar amp).
Now that I see an astro can get up to 30. Civics suck, astros rock! :afro:

My speedo/odo/trip doesnt work. My van used to get 19 combined average loaded full of stuff.

me too. Other than my van, i have an hhr, express, & olds intrigue. All great cars made by a "great" manufacturer.

I do have a honda, but it is what it is. A toy. Its a 1971 honda n600. Hopefully it will be running soon. Cute little car though.

Re: What's your MPG?

Postby madscience » June 4th 2008, 8:00pm

Somewhere around 15MPG if I drive it easy, otherwise its more like 12MPG.

Mine is a stock 4.3L 2000 Astro LS. I did have an Eaton locker put in to make it
Posi Traction but the gearing ratio is still the same. I cant figure out why these
things get such bad gas mileage. I've gotten to where I only drive it every now and then
because the Gas Mileage is the worst out of all the cars and Truck that I own.

I still love my Astro though, I cant ever see me getting rid of it.

Re: What's your MPG?

Postby 2002Safari » June 4th 2008, 8:37pm

I have a 2002 Safari SLT AWD with 110k miles. I drive 10 miles to work. If I take it slow and easy and anticipate stops, I can pull 17.96 using Costco gas. The last time I filled up, the added 10% ethanol so I would expect mileage to drop.

I keep a continuous spreadsheet of all maintenance and gas usage. I've found that keeping off the acceleration from starts pays 1.5 mpg dividends. At $4.00 + per gallon the payoff will be big.

I do wish these vans would bring better MPG, but . . .

I towed my 16' Casita trailer to the coast several weeks ago and got 15.75 mpg which I felt was good as I had been getting around 16.5 on my work runs.

Hi DOcean
Mine is now 28 to 30 mpg (Canadian Gallon) on the highway easy driving at 90 kph/55 mph. It used to be more but the change in tires and rear end gears dropped it down. I have the ScanGaugeII unit installed and confirms my calculations.

With hightop and no rear seats I got 17.8 on my trip to TN. That included a lot of hilly country. I am guessing I might get 20 on the highway on flatter terrain. Haven't checked City.
