<rant> Argh I hate this stupid Microsoft commercials where they say "to the cloud".

And it's not because I use a Mac. It's just soo stupid. For a multi billion company, they should have done better. It's just annoying.

The only thing that annoys me about the commercial is that trends happen in cycles yet they are always advertised as being "new" when they aren't. They should really be saying "BACK to the cloud!"

There was a time back in the dark ages of computing when everything was electronically centralized. And this central location was somewhere in a non-descript windowless building that was full of rooms containing 6 foot tall reel-to-reel tape machines. And this building communicated data to other buildings all over the country..and it was all accessible from a terminal screens with green text.

And then someone got this brilliant idea that computer could be PERSONAL and that the data should be LOCAL.

40 years later the industry is going back to centralized computing.

My issue is not so much "the cloud" as the company intranet. I'm at a "remote" location, and I hate it when IT trips over a wire does maintenance back at headquarters and all of a sudden, I'm not connected, and I can't retrieve or save stuff. Makes for an annoying day.

So if your internet goes down, so much for connecting to "the cloud". Guess it's a sunny day w/o a cloud in the sky.

I've lived long enough now to know that if you wait long enough... everything that's old becomes new again. Technology has come a long way in computerization in the last 30 years. But yeah, the term is very, very annoying. Me, I'll stick with my hard disks and local storage as long as possible. That way all the data is under my control and not controlled by a possibly less than ethical third party or government.

When this ad first aired 3 years ago upon the release of the beta, we pointed that out on Microsoft's discussion forum. They swore up and down that it was an HP and not a macbook. Obviously the marketing company that they hired to create the ad didn't think that anyone would notice.
