3rd Annual Burning Van/life as an ASTROSAFARIAN van vagabond

Postby LAZ 1 » April 29th 2019, 10:05pm

I am getting pumped about doing another Northern leg of my twice yearly SNOBIRD EXPRESS road trip from Lake Chapala, Mexico, to beautiful Vancouver Island, Canada. I am 95% packed and almost ready to roll.

I plan to leave tomorrow morning, stop for a few days at Totanaka RV park in San Carlos nuevo Guaymus, Sonora, Mexico. Then on to Tucson Az for the next weekend. Then Phoenix, Prescott, Flagstaff, Az. I plan to do some wandering around Az, visiting Journeys Off Road, a few junk yards looking for a few A/S van parts, perhaps Ruger's shop, and possibly look around some other interesting places. Ending up in Mid May, at the 2019 OVERLAND WEST EXPO, near Flagstaff. Ater that I drive to Eastern Washington, and attend the epic ASTROSAFARIAN event, where we will all draw straws, light the losing straw holders's van on fire, get nekkid, and dance around the flames howling at the moon ...
unless of course, the usual burn restriction is in effect.
(;-{)

After that, back to Fantasy Island, then June, 27- 30, over to the mainland for the 2019 BC OVERLAND EXPO, in Whistler.
Maybe staying on the mainland, wandering around the BC interior ( if there are no major forest fires this year) finishing up July 11 - 14, in NAKUSP, BC, at the Horizons Unlimited get together.

Not much planned for the rest of the Summer, except wandering aimlessly around some of the abandoned logging roads on the Island. I spent a few weeks last Summer in Port Alberni, on the West side of the island, and enjoyed that time very much. I would like to spend more time exploring that area better.

Being a Retired Gentleman Of Leisure is a tough job,
but some body has to do it,
and this might as well be ME!

PS: I am selling my 2004 AWD ASTRO Mini Motorhome build. The Siver Streak is looking for a new owner, who will enjoy wandering down the road less traveled in comfort and style. Due to age related lifestyle changes, I will be doing most of my tfuture traveling in my 2005 AWD Safari Steath camper van.
The times they are a'changin' ...

I really do not have parts laying around, but I have collected some things for a drawing giveaway. Found a NOS front driveshaft, should be here in a few days, but, gonna take van out on highway, and to a large parking lot,to check other stuff, before installing it. I was wondering what nite and day temps are there, normally? Looks warm. Also, looks like,as I will be coming through Spokane, looks like would be faster/better to take RT 2?

Got invited to fish n' float the Deschutes for memorial day -- trust me it was a hard decision, but I haven't been on a river for years and it was my favorite thing about living in Eugene. Best part -- I'm flying to PDX and getting picked up by friends!

Hopefully next year I can make BV...

Or maybe we can do a dispersed campout near Bend or in the Steens later in the summer!

I've had a last minute conflict come up and won't be able to make it this year.

It would be super fun to try to set something up for later in the summer...Bend or the Steens sounds pretty awesome to me!

Currently chilling out in Las Vegas, after escaping THE 2019 OVERLAND EXPO in Flagstaff.

On Sunday, the weather turned brutal, with high winds and SLEET! The motorcycle crowd ( at least the smart ones) left early Sunday morning, and most of the vendors starting packing up about then as well. By 3 PM, the site was like a ghost town. I was on the road for Vegas ASAP, getting chased by the weather most of the way.

So,
if there are any West Coasters heading North to the BV event, it might be possible to meet and convey up? My schedule and route selection possibilities are open.
Google Maps says approximately 18 hours for me to get to Rimrock Meadows from Vegas. I will likely split that up into three six hour drives.

Anyone want to share the road with the Silver Streak ( which usually streaks along at 55-60 for best gas mileage), but can go faster if necessary ( like when escaping sleet.)
