Nice way to show off fireworks by including your van...

A long time ago, I took some firework pics reflected off my car window. Can't seem to find them, it was back when you used film, and I can't locate where I put a bunch of my photos. Also wasn't an Astro (my old POS Camaro).

Well, a few days ago I swapped out an upper radiator hose with another old one from my donor vehicle parts collection. My fan had bit a notch in the hose, it wasn't leaking but I didn't want it to blow under pressure. BTW, a Silverado hose works, with about 8" trimmed from the engine side. I have ordered and received a stainless steel flex hose w/silicone ends, but that will be after I install the new engine. I do have to flush the radiator out, it's kinda filthy and rusty.

I also ordered (and just got today) the bushings and end links for my front sway bar, hoping that will remove a clunking from the front. Went around banging on everything under the front end with a mallet to see if I could make the noise, those rattled. Went with silicone bushings. I'll grab some pics when I put them on.

Well, got the end links and bushings on. Still have a rattle, thinking it might be the heat shields.

Here's the pics.

Postby Big_kid » July 10th 2020, 10:05pm

Well, yesterday and the evening before, my van, my son and I were used to help my daughter's family move out of their apartment and into a house- down the street from us. It was weird seeing my van driven by someone else. I was also able to notice I have a reverse light out. If I'd ever get it inspected I guess I would have known about it. No issues aside from the usual stalling at lights. My daughter said my van is 20-25 years ahead of it's time, turning off the engine at stop lights like the new cars do. Maybe one of these days I'll look into that. This weekend isn't looking too good for that.

That, and a fuel filter (also bought years ago.. I've never done one yet)
Maybe the sway-bar bushings this weekend.. (not much else to do)

Not a damned thing. I drove it to and from work yesterday, but that's it.

It's too freaking hot and humid to do anything outside.

My wifes Safari van would do that about every 4 months. In fact I've got a 2 pack of bulbs hanging on a nail in my garage just for it. Didn't matter, summer or winter 1 would bad, and get changed.

As for things to do, I've got a pair of idler arms sitting here waiting to go on when I feel up to it. ;)

I was going to do the hover conversion, but my flux capacitor was on the blink so I just slapped some new wheels and tires on it.

Ok, there are a few things. First, I was going to try and paint all the calipers which is why it was up on jackstands. I tried the POR-15 caliper paint, but on the vehicle it started getting messy, so I just stopped with the driver front. It also didn't look as good so I didn't take a pic of it. I'll do it better at a later time. Next, those Jeep rims, altho being 5x5, had an offset, so I got some spacers. Yeah, I know, opinions abound for the pros and cons, I guess I'll get some personal experience. I did pay more and got some USA made ones, hope that is better than the China ones. Third, the tires are kinda wimpy, but hey, I got a killer deal, and originally the wheels & tires would have gone on the T&C and would've been a perfect size for it. After rocking 235/75-15 on the Astro these are over an inch smaller in diameter and 20mm (~3/4") narrower. Anyhow, I like the look of the rims and the next tires will be wider and taller.

Now to adjust my speedometer to be accurate. Easy to do with my handy-dandy DRAC w/switches and conversion chart.

2018-04-21_DRAC05.jpg

Next I have a power steering pump on order to replace what is probably the original pump which is leaking like a sieve. Hopefully I can separate the pulley w/o too much difficulty. That'll be in a future post.

So more fun with the Astro today. Finally got brave enough to look under the carpet in the rear, where when it leaks it holds the water for who knows how long.

2020-07-15_PeekUnderTheCarpet.jpg

Well, it looks like the paint may have saved the floor from rusting, so I started going deeper. I needed to remove the brackets for the rear bench, so my daughter came out to hold the wrench on top while I used the impact underneath.

2020-07-15_Before.jpg

2020-07-15_Underneath.jpg

So once the brackets were off, with 6 of the 8 nuts coming off with torque and heat and 2 bolts snapping, I could cut away the carpet..

2020-07-15_Particleboard.jpg

2020-07-15_Carpet.jpg

Now to get the saw and cut away the particle board.

Well, got the saw and started cutting. Got it ripped out and cleaned up.

2020-07-15_CuttingWood.jpg

Well, it didn't escape completely rust free. There is some rust and bubbling paint, but all in all not that bad.

I don't have time to repair it, as I'm going camping with it in a week so I have other more pressing things to fix on it. I just wanted the soaked carpet and wood out of it so I'm not dealing with mold and mildew.

Agreed. Some of that wood and carpet looked pretty nasty. It's probably why I haven't done anything in the back of mine (would get wet and hold water).

I did more wiring and also re did some wiring, I found out why the passenger side rear lower dutch door will not close properly cause i bent the top hinge on the body when I hammered the pins out to swap the doors so I will need a oxy acetylene torch to heat it to bend it back. I attempted to bend it with a wrench and a long pipe but it just goes right back to its bent state. Anyone have an idea other then heat?

Well, it rained yesterday, so this morning I took a peek, drat, there were puddles.

2020-07-16_Puddles.jpg

So I pulled the window trim and part of the inside panels, then ran a hose all around the window. If you look closely, you can see a trail of water from the corner of the bottom of the window.

2020-07-16_WindowLeakInside.jpg

So I pulled the window. I thought there would be caulk but it's just double sided foam tape. Hmm. Looking at where the window sat you could see where it wasn't sticking anymore and a trail of water inside.

So now to find some new sealant for the windows.

Re: What have you done to/with your van today?

Leaks at aftermarket windows and sunroofs on all types of RV's and vans are very common.
If you go to a good automotive window installer, they have many different shapes and sizes of butyl rubber caulk strips, and in tubes. That stuff is what they use to install modern windshields. It is very tacky and flexible. Once bonded, there should be no problem with leaks. They w\should be able to find something that will work for your situation.

Gosh, Andy, that was quite something.
Seems your van is in need of an "Interior Strip-Down".
Maybe something like we did on The Van years back.
.

Well, after all... what would Banacek say ?... “It is only a matter of time before armed citizens, waiting or not for the police, take things into their own hands, fire on the rioters for personal and property prot. & end up hunted like dogs.”
