Oil/Coolant mixing Troubleshooting

Oil/Coolant mixing Troubleshooting

Postby hankheat [OP] » October 7th 2020, 6:19pm

I posted last week about an issue I noticed a week or so after buying a used 2000 2WD Astro LS v6 with 100k on it. Everything seemed normal, no lights or codes, exhaust clear, no smoke, but with the engine warm, at higher speeds or quicker acceleration the power would dip. Not stall but dip.
I checked the fuel pressure (normal) and pulled the plugs. Then I noticed coolant leaking from the heater diverter valve. I put some dye in the find the leak. My radiator cap was gummed up with rusty looking deposits. I drained a couple ounces of oil and put a couple drops on a hot manifold & heard crackling.

So now I'm wondering if I have a blown head gasket. But I'm not seeing milky looking oil on the oil cap or dipstick. And again no white smoke.

My best guess is to drain & flush the coolant system and change the oil, and the plugs.

My question is: Is this condition so bad that I should NOT start the engine again? Any advice at what to do first? Is there a correct order of operations? Is it useless to do anything until I replace the head gasket? Do head gasket sealers work? And if the oil & coolant are mixing does that mean a sealer would seize the engine?
I do have a scan tool & app if there are helpful measurements to look at.

Halp. Thank you.

I wouldn't condemn the head gaskets just for that, "crackling".
Your plan sounds good.
replace that heater valve, they are known to fail just being touched.

Also it could be an intake gasket. drain the radiator. grab a gallon jug add 1 cup of cascade dish washer powder in the jug then fill with warm water. Shake it good then close the radiator petcock add the mixed water and powder then fill with water only. start the engine let it run for 45 minutes. buy one of these and cut the 3/4 inch hose and add the T.
https://www.ebay.com/p/1022074711?iid=3 ... 4sQAvD_BwE. hook a hose to the t turn the water on then start the engine and open the drain thing again. In the kit is a part that attaches to both the t and to the hose put that in place prior to turning the water on. You may get wet doing this. let it run again till water coming out is clear. this will clean out the oil in the cooling system.this must be done with heater on full and if you have a rear heater turn it on too.
Once its coming out clear , turn water off and allow to drain. then in your case I would just put water in till you figure out the rest of the problem. Also drain the engine oil and fill with cheap stuff and change the filter, run for a while then change it again. I would do this a few times but again figure out where its coming from first. Hope this helps, Mark

I would fix your leak, then pressure test the system to see if/where there are any more leaks. A lot of LAPS will let you borrow a pressure testing kit.

I wouldn't stress and start jumping to conclusions just yet ;)

Haha

Well, after all... what would Banacek say ?... “May be hard to believe... President Trump should rest easy and concede what was in fact a foregone conclusion: Another OLD MAN won with only about 50% of the Change Believers/Fools showing up."
