as i do stuff relating to this, would you rather i post pics & words to this thread, my build thread, or some other thread ??
i think i missed the "boat" on complete new marine intake set-ups with the 3-bolt flange, cable actuated throttle body's.
but i can find complete marine intake set-ups with the 4-bolt flange, drive by wire throttle body's for vortec v6 and v8 engines.
i don't mind using a 3-bolt adapter plate on a 4-bolt manifold, it might help with clearance for the cruise control cable attachment, which from what i've read so far is tight against the fuel rail.
my homework just arrived by media mail :

Either way, go with what you feel.
I picked up an aluminum intake, but I haven't had the injector bosses added to it yet. Will be a LOT lighter than that cast piece. It's sitting there next to the turbo kit, waiting for me to find the perfect 2005 van to put it in :)

I'd be interested in reading through that book if it ends up being valuable.

hi AstroWill,
been busy at work so i haven't done many pics yet - i think i'll put some stuff in this thread & when i get into things that veer off the theme i'll post those in my build thread.

i've pretty much decided on using the marine intake assembly, rather than digging out the plastic spider FI assembly when the time comes for replacement.

the 3-bolt type, cable drive throttle body, marine manifold assembly's seem to be all gone.

3-bolt throttle body vortec 4.3L V6 marine manifold assembly. all gone - WAAAHHH!!!!!!!!

the 4-bolt type, drive-by-wire throttle body manifold assembly's are in the close-out sale stage right now, so i guess i better snag one.

4-bolt throttle body vortec 4.3L V6 marine manifold assembly. get-em while they're hot!!! - $400.00

i should be able to use the original stock 3-bolt throttle body with an adapter plate.

sandwich of 3-bolt body / adapter / 4-bolt manifold - this is on an LS engine

the marine manifold cast iron weight penalty is OK with me.
fabrication should be minimal.
the marine throttle body is in the same place as it is on the the stock intake, so i can keep the stock vortec logo air box assembly.
if the e-test station would happen to open the hood it would look stock.
the marine intake also has a port that can be used for an EGR setup, if needed.

i've already got uninstalled JBA shorty headers (with EGR outlet) & a magnaflow mandrel bent y-pipe w/cat.

all that plus the 411 PCM & an electric fan setup & i'll be happy until it all wears out.

if i ever were to do a Vortec V8 swap i could do it with the same type of marine intake setup & have some of the swap work already finished.

4-bolt throttle body vortec 5.7L V8 marine manifold assembly. $1100.00. same deal about the 3-bolt setups all being gone.

i really like the book, for my knowledge level it's great. it's more than a primer but does not go into details about actually using tuning software. it does go into detail about what parts & pieces can be used together.

EXAMPLES :
i can't use a drive-by-wire throttle body like the one on the 4-bolt marine intake, combined with the original Astro single coil distributor, because GM never did such a thing - the 411 PCM can't understand that combination.

i think i could use the later 3-coil setup (post 2007 or 08 4.3l, see pic below), that fires with PCM controlled spark (no distributor, all thats left of one just turns the oil pump & sends the cam position signal), with the drive-by-wire throttle body, but i couldn't have cruise control because my '99 van doesn't have a BCM/ body control module, which would be needed to activate the drive-by-wire cruise control.

i haven't figured out yet if i could use a cable throttle body with PCM controlled spark, which as of now would be my preference if it is possible to do so.

trying to use any of the PCM's that came after the 411 type would probably involve too much rework/rewiring for my interest.

i haven't really scrutinized the wiring of the '03 - '05 Gen III Astro/Safari on my JY expeditions, but if they already have the BCM/body control module and the 411 PCM, LS V8 swaps into those year vans might be easier than i thought - maybe i'll start keeping an eye open for a clean '05 cargo with a dead engine.

i'll send the book along when we get to the mailing back-n-forth stage so you can check it out - there was an interesting section about a 4.3l turbo setup using the old GMC Syclone intake on vortec heads.
