Alternator swap

Postby Dannyboy93 [OP] » October 14th 2020, 7:03pm

Hey so i have an 05 astro with a bad alternator and im wondering if a swap with an earlier model astro will be compatible. As far as i know 05-09 astros are compatible but im looking at a 2001 astro. Does anyone know if i can use the 01 alternator?

First of all, Welcome to the site.

Astros/Safaris were discontinued in 2005 (last model year)

The Gen 3 was 2002-2005.

IIRC the alternator was the same on Gen2 and Gen3 but I'm sure several people will either confirm or correct me on this.

But if you are swapping the alternator anyway, it may make sense to upgrade to an AD244. You can search for "upgrade Alternator" for more details.

Hey mate, thanks for the welcome and reply.

Ah thanks for clarifying the 05-09 thing, i was going off what my local pick and pull told me over the phone but its possible i misheard them.

Sounds promising in regards to gen2 and gen3 having the same alternator, I would consider an upgrade but for now i just need a quick fix and i can pick this 01 astro for next to nothing.

Welcome to the site.
The junk yard has an interchange manual and they are pretty darn accurate. Where the confusion comes in is that it's the same alternator on many vehicles between years. So yes, your 2005 Astro might use the same alternator as the 2007 Silverado/Express/Savana/ETC.
Generally, just go with whatever they say will be a direct fit and you will be good to go. However, that doesn't mean that you can't get other things to fit/work with some adjustments.

Using the GM parts sites, you can enter your VIN number and look up the exact alternator from your van.
Just a quick look by year says that this is your alternator, or at least what they have replaced it with :) https://amzn.to/33Y2Xcw

Yet another way is looking at your current alternator, there are numbers stamped on there, can cross reference those numbers.

Check out the link in my signature for some helpful parts links/info.
