Not today but yesterday I fixed my no start issue by replacing the starter relay, pulled all the shelving and what not out of the back that was in there when I bought it, gave it a clean, replaced the factory head unit and front door speakers and finally drove it back home.

I had to drive it to a temp parking location after I bought it due to not having a parking permit yet and when I went to pick it up a couple of weeks ago it wouldn't start :( - glad to finally have that sorted

Drove up some tires

Finished up the long travel front so needed to test how everything moved when it got twisty.

Well today I decided to pull the front carpet from my project and give it a good washing while I'm waiting on front end parts. The thought came to me that this was probably a good idea being that the van is over 20 years old and has over 200,000 miles on it. While I was pressure washing it I joking thought to myself, who knows, it may have been owned by a serial killer in the past and I didn't want any legal entanglements from someone else's DNA. I hung the wet carpet in my shop to dry for a few days. When I went back to my shop a few hours later, the pad had separated from the carpet. That's when I saw this....

What would you hope to accomplish by "calling someone"?
Having your van "confiscated as evidence"?

PS: I'm pretty sure those aren't stains either.. they look like check-marks.
They are all in the SAME exact place on every slip.

Just broke down. Something in rear differential let go. Luckily close to home and my neighbor happened by and was able to drag me home. Sounded like I hit a big pothole and then no drive. Will take a look tomorrow....

Probably related to my passenger side axle replacement last fall... :D

Hoping it's not Total destruction. I do know where a g80 van is though. Sucks, car repairs in February makes me really want a garage, or a barn...

Fortunate that you were close to home. That is the part that gets real expensive, esp if in really remote areas.

Re: What have you done to/with your van today?

Postby Rockridge » February 12th 2021, 11:35pm

Just got home, the sun is setting, temp is dropping just like my interest in climbing under the van. It's gotta be toast. The bang was severe enough I shouted an involuntary expletive.

I spoke with the garage that I have been using for years about the cost to rebuild an axle for me if I brought them loose parts, they suggested a used axle.....

I am looking at getting a parts quote from a yard on Monday about an hour drive from me. My RPO sticker is not legible anymore so they have my VIN.

Looked at a low mileage RWD Astro this afternoon for parts, formerly a Florida van that had a bad transmission, unfortunately, the guy parked it in the dirt for the last 5 years, everything under the van is toast, too bad as it has a G80.

$ 1,700 for a remanufactured axle....

Looked at another van at a small junkyard, it was the same, nothing left of any brackets etc.

Alternative plan?

I might go look at a high mileage Safari tomorrow to get me through the short (or long?) term as I am finding used parts are in tough shape here in NH. The van looks good, I am concerned about motor mounts and that kind of thing. The seller claims to have owned 9 Astro's or Safari's over the years and this van has all the bells and whistles and is an 05, AWD with G80. Says there is a check engine light for high fuel pressure? Need to ask him the specific code #. I Dunno, if I can make a good deal, it would get me on the road quickly. Maybe we need to get by with one car for the family for a week or so and I do an axle swap if I can find a nice one. Freight from away is going to be expensive for sure. Looking like 500 to 800 from the bay, southern parts, probably would take a couple of weeks if I placed an order now to getting my van on the road....

Maybe the guys in Concord will have something but he only has one van in the yard which is slim picking. Might mean he will have to import something from away in which case I might as well order one myself...

UGH...

Dunno what to do. I do like these vans, but... Frustrated, was having a good run there for a while.

Open it up, if just the spider has failed you might be able to drop in a locker?

Did the r/r this summer on my '93. Big brakes, steel springs and Detroit tru trac and found the spider of my new/old gen 2 rear to be pretty bad w/ lots of chips n' bits on the magnet but the ring and pinion were pristine. Cleaned it out, put in the locker and she worked great.

If you find no damage other than the spider you can call it a reason for upgrade!

Thanks, I'm in central NH. I emailed some sellers on ebay for pictures of their axles.

Neat trick, using a VIN search site, I looked up the vehicles the parts were coming off, found a couple that were G80 so there were I think 2 that I emailed on. Nothing close, unfortunately.
